Ford to idle nine plants for three to five weeks
11/14/08
Quote:
Ford Motor Co. officials have announced the company will shut down nine of the company’s plants – in Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Missouri, Kentucky, Ontario and Mexico – for three to five weeks because of a drop in demand for new cars and trucks. The facilities have about 23,000 production workers.
Bloombergreports the shutdowns will start later this month and continue during part, or all, of December.
Ford officials indicated that they expect to make about one-third fewer vehicles this winter compared with last year.

Yea, kind of hard to buy one of their gas-guzzlers with no job and while eating spam...

as long as union workers demand High wages or should I say outragous wages and benefits the costs will be passed to the consumer....BUT now that consumers CANT pay those high price tags maybe the unions will fade into the sunset, wages will go down to an amout that is not crazy and things will balance out again.

$1,500 is added to the price of a car because of healthcare costs. GM is shifting those costs over to the UAW at the end of 2009. Do you still want to see the UAW fade into the sunset? As far as outragous wages, GM and the UAW negotiated a 2 teir pay scale this last contract. The newhires that replace retirees, will now be making half the wages...about $14 per hour. I worked the line for 30 years, and until you do it yourself, you have no idea what it is like. Did you ever work a job where someone has to relieve you in order for you to just go to the bathroom? You bet I made good money, and earned every cent. Where else could I have gone in America and made $28 an hour without a trade or degree? I just shake my head when someone puts us down...they just don't get it. The auto industry was the backbone of the middle class...until the japanese moved in.
