I had a '63 Chrysler Newport...with push button tranny on left side of the wheel...we used to run around town with paper bags on our head... This was in Anchorage Alaska in 1982. Had the Boom Box tied to the rear window dash area. Car was a rolling sex machine with a back seat that could rival a bunk in almost any big truck. Either the seat was big or my backside has just gotten bigger. I traded this monstor for a Subaru. Where the entire rear area behind the drivers seat was still smaller then the back seat in the Newport. Oh, it had a 383 Hemi too....

By definition - Citation means - an honor or award - even a commendation....

but the secondary meaning IS negative - as in a "citation to appear in court"

in terms of names - it was probably a poor choice - and yet the name was easily trumped by the yucky design and poor handling of the CAR!!!

looking back - no one made a good car in 1980
the only redeaming qualities that the mass produced automobiles of the 50's and 60's had were style and nice lines... - take those away - and restrict the engine output ala 1973' smogger code - and you have the mid to late 70's #### mobiles.

Whoa!

You're way off here. I don't have time to get into it now, but there was a lot of egineering goodness (esp. mechanical) that occured during that period.

I recognize the engineering advancements that developed during those years - but comparing them to todays vehicles is a joke.

as for the "goodness" - you would be hard pressed to point out anything cutting edge in 1960 that is still in application TODAY - in its same form and with its original efficiency...

performance - much better today

handling - not even close

style - I like the classic lines better - but there are some sweet designs now

etc etc

Well I would hope that virtually everything that you compare has improved substantially over a fifty-year time frame, but for the times, there was some damn good stuff going on.

The grand national - (one of the quickest GM products ever) - is a modern classic -

but was not made in 1980..

(as you stated)

in 1980 you had a smogger regal trim in the G body - and the olds and chevy counterparts were at best anemic and handled like wet noodles.

I love the GN, but I'll have to disagree with you as far as "best ever". Being a Trans Am fanatic, I would have to gear my thinking that direction.

Traffic Lights

as far as best ever

(we are taking this thread in the wrong direction)

the New ZR-1 has won every INTERNATIONAL award for performance cars - and will likely go down in the history books as the quickest rear wheel drive car to ever knock out the Nurburgring in under 7:30...
