There is some that will push 150+. But you have to fully understand if you hit something you are dead. We have Chargers that will hit around 160 and that is flat out getting it. Of course they have been modified. The old 1995 Caprices were incredible to. Most of our 95 and 96 Caprices would limit out at 130-132, however a few of us had put chips in them and reprogrammed them. The fastest I had my 95 was 152 mph and i backed out of it, a lot of wind resistence was making it very unstable. Although chasing some older mustangs and camaro's you need that amount of speed to keep up. As a officer you have to think of the liability you are creating running that fast and who else is on the road and could possibly be hurt. After doing this for a while, I'm not running that fast anymore, it's not worth it for me to get wipedout and kill myself or others. Had one the other day running 127 in a volkswagon, almost blew my mind when i saw the speed reading on laser. I never knew a dam volkswagon would run that hard. Called ahead and three other troopers were waiting on him 2 miles up the road. An 19 year old punk who had suped up his little hotroad that has gotten him 6 tickets in the last year. Hopefully after this one, he'll lose his licnese for good. But i agree with all of you this cat had to do some modifications to get that kind of speed out a Buick, even the Grand National.

The 94 Caprice would run 140 bone stock
01/02 Camaro (B4C) would run 158
The new Chargers are actually "pigs" and get dusted pretty bad in the short run, anything over 1 mile and they can hang with the majority.

We have a "wealthy" DTF(Cocaine Cowboys) that have the SRT/8 Chargers with the 426 CI motors that have been custom tuned.
They are indeed "Road Warriors"
Motorola is still the fastest . . . . . . . . .

Here is dash cam video of chase. Doesn't look like 150 to me. But the last time I drove that fast was in the 70's in a Plymouth Superbird Road Runner.

Amen to your post, particularly the liability part! The red lights and siren do not remove the legal mandate that you drive with care for the motoring public. Anything over about 60-70 you are outrunning your siren, and with windows up, air condition on, radio/CD player whatever, or talking on the cell phone, you just are not going to be heard.

I've been to way to many officer involved crashes that involved high speed pursuits. While I detest these no ballz administrators who just flatly ban pursuits in ALL circumstances, there is a time and a place to say uh-uh, let the radio do the work.

I worked in California, for two different rural county sheriff departments. Even though California state law exempted law enforcement vehicles from the emissions control that robbed your car of all power, neither of my departments would allow the shops, (or anyone else for that matter,) to remove all that factory emissions ####. I had a 80's something Malibu that had a top speed of 90 MPH. Talk about frustating. This was a well designed car, well balanced, and certainly could have handled the speed, but the top brass just wasn't gonna have it...

I had a Diplomat that would easily do 130, but there was a flat spot with that entire fleet of cars. It was great off the line, and had decent top end, but trying to increase speed from say 55 to about 90, it took forever to build up. It also had a small gas tank, and was a gas hog. Not a good combination for a remote desert post.

I think the best overall car that I had was a 94 or 95 Crown Vic. Excellent off the line, good top end, and well balanced and suspended.

Also, a good part of my career was spent driving 4X4 SUVs. The idea of running 100+ in what is basically an unstable vehicle never appealed to me.

After you have been on the job for a few years, the realization of the liability involved somewhat blanks out the joy of the adrenalin rush you get from a chase. Yes, it is still there, but when you have seen the results of bad decisions, lawsuits against your fellow officers and department, it at least SHOULD make you stop and think.

I wonder if the guy in the VW had put a Porsche engine in it. I had a 1964 bug that I always wanted to do that with, but never could afford it...

I was retired before any of these that you talk about. But I agree about Motorola!

o.0

One time when I was young and reckless, I had a Beretta Sport that had a 110 governer on it, and to this day I am very disappointed in myself how many times I cursed that thing when it kicked in...

Of course, my IROC could outrun that buick, in her 383 days. >.>
