Why is it so hard to find good drivers?

#1 There are very few who are willing to learn to haul cars, and be willing to work.
Browse this whole website forum. Most every post asking about how to break into the business starts with "HOW MUCH AM I GOING TO MAKE????"

Not, "I'm a new driver and willing to pay my dues to gain experience.


10 Years ago when I was a TM with the largest / oldest Auto Carrier in the west, I had to hire 10 to get maybe 2. Who knows what the ratio is today.

I could go on and on, but you already know the rest.

 

So have you accepted a bunch of applications and applicants are failing due to poor driving records/bad CSA scores or bad DAC reports?

What does your company consider a "good driver" to be?

 

My first thought is ..Northeast, ugh! Second thought is.. Good drivers usually find good companies..

Benefits?
Home time?
Equipment?

same reason it's hard to find any good employees in any job, there simply isn't as much pride in your work anymore, everything is "just a job"

 

As a guy that has worked his ### off for a long time, I'm finding that the "pay your dues" type of logic is garbage.

I take care of equipment like it was mine, Can run like the wind if needed.

I find that those that want you to work for a lower wage, Will find ways to KEEP you at the lower wage.

If you truly want "Good" or "great" drivers, (As they already have jobs) You sir should get out your checkbook and go head hunting.

You really dont want "good" drivers if you sit around and wait for them to stumble into your office begging for work, Your just hoping for a "diamond in the rough" at bargain prices.
