One company is quoting $1700 hub to hub, another $2200 door to door for a mid size SUV move from DC to Seattle. I feel like just selling the car and giving up....Is this as big a scam/overpriced as it seems?

Not sure of the miles but guessing that it is under $1/mile. Seems pretty cheap to me. Are you expecting someone to pay you to haul these cars.

Hmmm.... $.80 per mile for a SUV going over 2700 miles. Just with the fuel and insurance, your vehicle does not even cover the cost to get your vehicle to the other end of the country. Now add in driver pay and maintenance for the truck and you are going to need a crane to get out of the hole.

So no, it is not a rip off. The only way that truck makes money is to pick up and drop off along the way and not much going to the dakotas and Montana and that is 1/3rd or more of the distance. You can always put it on U-#### and get it done for $800 plus body damage and no insurance.

If you drove it yourself, the fuel alone would be around $800. Then there's the cost of your time, hotel bills, restaurant meals, etc.

It has been a while since I hauled cars, but I would expect that you will pay most anyone at least $0.50/mile. I just ran the miles on PC Miler and it is 2848 miles from DC to Seattle. So, the rates you received are not much out of line from what I would expect. Even with the lower rate, you are only paying $0.59/mile. If you think it is too high, you could check around for a lower rate, but I would not expect to see a rate much less than what you have already been quoted. It is a lot of money, but so is the expense of running a truck for that many miles. You can always sell the SUV and buy another when you get to your destination. Another possible option is rail. I don't know if the railroads ship single vehicles, but it might be an option as long as you are not in a hurry to get the vehicle. Central Dispatch is the primary loadboard for car haulers. I don't recall if they accept loads from individuals, but that might be another option if you are looking for more quotes.

Selling the car makes the most sense unless you want to drive/fly.

I was quoted $1400, Florida to South Dakota on my car. I got a $250 plane ticket and drove it here myself. About $300 for fuel, drove straight thru sleeping in car.

That is a cheap rate. Everyone expects to get things done for peanuts. Go figure. Also, anybody quoting door to door is a fool.

not understanding why people would want to ship their cars anyways.

you're obviously going to need it so why not just drive it there. can't get any cheaper then that. or just sell it and buy something when you get there.
