I considered getting into this myself, as I live in Dallas and there are lots of guys that run cars from Dallas to Austin/San Antonio/Houston.

I've talked to several, and not one of them said the money is worth it and they're constantly breaking every HOS regulation you can think of.

What you want to do is read this entire sub-forum. I'm pretty sure most of your questions will be answered. Luck.

So, the people that do this, and told this other guy, are wrong?

I started with an F350 and a three car wedge. In the beginning I thought I was making money until I wore out my truck. I went from 3 to 6 ... 6 to 9 ... and then 9 to 10 car haulers. The question you need to ask yourself is "who is my customer?" ... Getting wholesale brokered freight is like waiting for scraps to fall off the table. Large companies that are hauling for major manufactures put the good loads on their trucks. The hotshots get whats left. That said, a smart car guy might make a living running exotic cars in an enclosed trailer for retail clients. Figure out your cost per mile - what the REAL cost is to operate whatever truck and trailer combo you plan to use. Then take a look at what people are paying for transport. From my experience, people want more for less. I would not run anything small than a 10-car hauler under my own authority. My 2 cents

PS My experience in Texas: Unless you're OK with sitting around and taking in a few rodeos while waiting for loads, Texas is a black hole. I have deadheaded out of Dallas more times I care to admit to.

I am currently working on starting up my own Hotshot hauling business. "Nothing better then being your own boss". Now I worked for a guy that did this exact type of business and didn't succeed. my question is I currently have 2003 F350 I am planning to purchase a 3 car wedge trailer so I can run under 26000 pounds. Do I have to worry about a authority, fuel tax and so on. I don' want to start to big until I can pick up enough business.

Be sure to read up on motor carrier regs ... Unless you are "Not for Hire", the answer to your question is "yes". If you're a business, offering a service, for money, and operating on the road, you need a USDOT number and MC number. If you're looking to haul new cars, no one will touch you without numbers and cargo insurance.

I believe your truck would need to be registered under your friend's company ... you would run a New Mexico apportioned tag
