I've never done it, but the part that would bother me is getting from the truck dealer to an airport or motel and then the airport the next day to fly back to point "A". You have to travel light since you're constantly jumping from truck to airplane to motel to truck etc. You have to un-deck each unit at the dealer. Rain or shine. And you don't want to damage anything, right ?

He said it getting to the airport after a delivery is a problem,,did it back in 74-75 for a Mack dealer they paid everything,,most delievery drivers I met told me that they got bus tickets,, I also had many problems with new trucks breaking down back then,, as far as driving them it is no big deal, can't back up when hauling decked trucks, sometimes the lead truck is nice with a big motor sometimes they are suck ### fleet trucks or trucks with no sleeper , can't smoke in them either and sometimes when there is not a sleeper motels are difficult to find and get into,,sometimes you can't use the sleeper .

The ones I see are using a taxi to get to the airport after delivering the truck. Seen a driver pay 250.00 for a taxi from Minot to Bismarck because no airplane seats were available from Minot. The company would load a credit or debit card for expenses. Sometimes cars are available from driveaway companies for transport. These jobs used to be Union, and now the companies double breasted another company to run non-union. Heard many horror stories from driveaway companies. If you can enter Canada, it puts you in a better position. Does this company only move Volvos or Macks or do they have terminals across the country?

I can't think of what forum this would go in other then here .... that said, I've never done it. But I had a good friend that di for many years. Very few horror stories. Usually the dealer parts driver ran him to the hotel or airport.

Yep, about the same as delivering Motorhomes, BUT, you ARE at the mercy of the dealer as to when he can give someone up, also, because of no exact timing you usually wind up on standby flights, which can create a problem depending on location and time of year.

Years ago it wasn't terrible, but with TSA, ticket pricing, dealers always being busy, I can see why a lot of guys take a bus/train.

In the end probably just like everything else, good days and bad days.

Ask who pays damages? Watched a new Pete get delivered with 2 small dents in the bumper & of course they wrote it up on the delivery inspection. The dents were not noted on the drivers original paperwork.

Good question, about 6 months ago there was a brand new ext. cab M2 with 8.9 ISL going up for auction at co-part, less than 100 miles Loooong WB, I thought about bidding on it, went for about 40,000 somebody took about a 60,000 hit, and the only thing I could see wrong was the end of frame (behind rear axle) was tweeked ever so little.

I am assuming it was the last unit on a saddle mount and guy went into a low spot in a parking lot while turning? Probably could have been trued for less than 2 grand.

Yeah, I knew a guy who ran for a company hauling new equipment. You train for about two weeks at their facility decking equipment. Using 5th wheel saddles and blocking equipment for straight trucks / dump trucks so that you get a feel for what you'll be doing out in the field.

You supply your own tools for undecking at the customer and You'll also be responsible for making the truck roadworthy so installing axles shafts and uncaging spring brakes. Sometimes the end user will have an A-frame and others will need to call in a wrecker to undeck the trucks and It is all types of weather so be sure to bring extra clothing like coveralls and jackets, rain-gear etc. I believe most end users are accommodating and they may help with getting you to a bus depot or airport but don't quote me.

You are going to need to plan your trips accordingly for rest as you cannot use the bunks if so equipped and you cant back up a set of decked trucks. Other drivers with these companies should give you the lowdown if you decide to go with them. Good luck and stay safe.
