Hey guys, how much cargo insurance do you have to carry to get loads? I can't find any regulations, but someone told me it has to be around 50k for each car, so if you have a trailer for 3 cars it has to be 150K and so on, otherwise brokers won't even load you. Is that true? Thanks

I dont know about three cars but the standard is now around 200k for big trucks and 250k preferably. New cars want from 350k to 500k. We carry 500k as required for new Toyotas

Dont remember who but one of these big car hauler outfits required $100k for 1-3 cars, $200k for 4-6 and so on for broker loads.

Just make sure YOU have enough for what you have on incase of a catastrophic accident. I saw a guy one day that had $700,000 worth of cars on a truck and I'd pretty much bet he didn't have enough insurance if something bad happened.

Back when I hauled cars I carried $250,000 in cargo and that was a number of years ago. Most auctions have minimum amounts of insurance you must carry in order to pick up on their property. I owned 10 car rigs. I have a friend who currently pulls cars on a wedge trailer and he carries $150,000. I would check with some insurance companies and find what they are mostly underwriting. If you have dealers, brokers, auctions or people whom you plan on hauling you could call them and ask what they require. You don't want to over insure, but most certainly don't want to under insure. I would rather have more than not enough. I would think that if you are pulling a 10 car rig you would need to carry a minimum of $250,000.

I have had my own authority for 19 months. I started out w Progressive 1 million liability 250k cargo w a 100k blanket policy. Haven't had a moving violation in 11 yrs and paid 13k a year and some change last year. No tix and no claims they were gonna go up on me this year. I switched to Carolina Casualty. They specialize in auto hauler insurance and also offer a total loss Claus which is required by Hansen Adkins if you plan on sub hauling for them
