I have a General Lee that I bought years ago. It was used with a Palomar 350 and a Monkey Made antenna. A couple years ago I killed the kicker by somehow turning on the high side button on the radio. Took the kicker out and ran that way for a while. Smacked a tree limb and broke the coil loose on the MM antenna so I popped a Firestick on to get by. Like a dumbxxx I never matched it up and think I hurt the radio. It now backs up when keyed, although it does swing well and seems to have ok mod. When the radio was new it really talked even when barefoot. The shop I bought it from said they had changed the finals and upped some of the gage on the wiring.

So now I'm wanting to return to having a good radio and want to do it right. So my questions are:

Should I send it in to someone and spend money on Top Gunning it and whatever else it needs?
Or does it just make more sense to invest in a new radio?
Also, I tig welded the broken coil on the MM and wonder if it's ok to use. If not, what's the best antenna to use with a good radio and a small kicker?

I really want a quality set-up and am willing to spend the money to get it. I just don't want to waste money on things and am looking for a little guidance.

Thanks in advance any help would be greatly appreciated!!:biggrin_25514:

If your willing to spend the money buy a new radio. Have it matched to the amp you plan on using (Texas Star's are good amp's). Antenna wise go with Wilson, Predator 10k or Monkey made and have the radio and amp set up to the antenna.

If your willing to spend buy a connex(general lee and connex3300 are the same inside)texas star 500v(best amp they make it will outperform the 667v if set up properly),or a fatboy 4 pill(which is what I prefer)and a monkey made or fat boy antenna.match everything up and youll have good audio and get out pretty far.

What's funny? I'm not claiming to have a clue, just looking for advice.

As to the OP,just fix the stuff you have now. Sounds like the radio still works. No? just knocked the pills outta your kicker right? Easy enough to fix.

I myslef would rather have an older radio because the receive is not as noisy as the newer radios. The only problem with older radios is finding the finals to go into them if you blow one becasue they no longer make em. but if the thing still works then just have it checked out and that older radio will most likely out last any of the newer radios built and sold today.
