    WHY ?

It is NOT illegal to service a " EXPORT " or so called 10 meter radio only USE them ... Since there is NO requirement for a LICENSE or quailification to call yourself a REPAIRMAN he has no reason not to unless he just does not want to mess with them.

What is wrong with the radio ?

Do you want ILLEGAL mods done to it ? If so he may be worried about his GROL if he has one the FCC has pulled some of them .....

The audio cuts in and out, tried other mike and still have the same problem.

I don't want illegal mods....just a radio that sounds good and clear.

Check the pins in the socket were the mic plugs in. I had my connex do something similar. I used a small jewlers screw driver to SLIGHTLY spead the pins out and it solved the problem.

That was the first thing I looked for. That wasn't it either. I don't know what the deal is with this thing. I'm about ready to use it as a wheel chock!

The T&A truck stop on off of I-95 in Elkton Maryland. Kenny takes pride in his work and is very reasonable when it comes to new and used equipment at the shop. He is an excellent technician too. I am a ham and would let him work on my equipment. When I am in a hurry and don't have time, Kenny will wire up any mic for my high end equipment. He has also worked on my cb radios. I'll buy the good coax from him too to run on VHF. He does not cut corners and takes his time in doing all repairs. Once you stop there, you'll want to come back again.

In Response to the post about Ray Phelps in Elkin North Carolina Dont waste your time the old guy has seen his better days, took a Zodiac 4 ceramic tube model to him a few months ago and after a month wait it come back doing less than it did when it came to him, technician took it upon himself to rework the screen and anode, even though he had a checksheet of what I wanted done, really crappy work, not recommended

It's at least possible that going by your checksheet had previously had your amp generating spurs and/or harmonics, which would have shown grossly as more watts on a wattmeter, even if they weren't in-band. Depending upon what's driving an amp (how clean is the driving source?) any amp that's not sufficiently filtered has no "guidance" as to what frequencies to pass. And even a "clean" source, running into an amp that's been tuned strictly for maximum smoke, can end up being a harmonic generation system.
Ray knows this stuff, as he's been doing it a really, really long time.
I'm just curious, mind you, but what directed your checksheet of items to perform that couldn't be done in your own shop? I'm confused. If a customer sends in a radio or related device with a desired outcome, I'll apply my 40-ish years of experience to accomplishing it correctly. If that customer tells me what steps to take to accomplish his desired result, my first action will be a phone call the the customer; the second is likely to be a return shipment, freight collect, that same day, without opening the case.
I believe part of what you pay a professional shop for is having the equipment on the bench to do things correctly, the experience and knowledge to use that equipment correctly and, at least in the past, the appropriate FCC license and/or industry certification(s) to show peer standards review.
Just my opinion....and we all know what is said about those....
