I know you were and I had a bit of fun back .... SWAN and SILCONIX
Made JUNK .... even the transverters drifted.
SWAN wanted to come out with a 10/11/6 meter radio in the mid 70's even showed one around the hamfests but THANKFULLY it was never produced past a few protypes.
TODAY most radios cover even more bands ( FT-450, ft-950 are 2 of them ) and they WORK .......

Yep there were good old radios like the Little LULU even if only 250 were made .... AH the good old days even if it was AM ... And lets not forget Polycom and Gonset .... They made CB as well as ham radios.

Question: Is there a "Build Quality" difference between the older Uniden Grant XL or LT Philippine units except from the XL being the previous generation/series to the LT?

Your question relly opens a can of worms LOL! Best is a matter of opinion. I saw someone here blast the RCI 2970. Yet I talked to London from my 4-wheeler when it was parked in a lot at a short term school I was attending in Montvale NJ. The radio was an RCI 2900 (short lived forerunner of the 2950). Yet I HATED the radio. It was CRAP as someone said. But the sideband was stable on that radio. Just made like junk. Was pushing it through a 300 watt (honest count) amp and a 102" steel whip. I was on top a a very high hill too.

Skip is really not radio dependent. It depends on conditions, atmospheric, sunspots, etc. It's also systems dependent. For best consistent results you need quality, well matched components. (Radio, co-ax, amp, antenna). However when conditions are right even a 4 watt radio can talk skip.

A word of advice. Unless you want to lay down some serious cash, don't expect to compete with regulars on channel six. Many of those guys invest THOIUSANDS to step on each other. Even worse they doi it from mobiles! My buddy has a Suburban with a huig linear driving a monster liner. all fan cooled. he has a heavily modded CB built into a console with meters that cost more than most truckers radios. If I recall correctly he puts out some 3000 watts. He has to have ->3<- Alternators and several batteries to power all this junk. That's why a Suburban. Oh yeah, forget about hauling cargo in the back of the Suburban amps, fans and extra batteries take up most of that space! Gotta go mobile too. Your neighbors probably wont want to hear you coming through their toaster 80D and other electronics as CB/10-11 meter amps are often sloppy and produce unwanted harmonics.

Sideband is a good bet. With less watts and a good antenna - coax setup, you will make some great contacts. ANY quality SSB rig with a decent quality amp of a few hundred watts or more that has an SSB delay switch will get you the game. FYI channel 38 Lower Sideband is the national calling channel. This may vary by region. Channel 6 is the national AM skip channel but when conditions are right it can be a hot mess.

Ranger 2950 or 2970 for sbb but not on am for am all you need is a cobra 29 and a good amp like a fatboy or davemade of course a good antenna too for big trucks I prefer a predator 10k or a monkeymade for cars 102 ss whip

I have been using a stock RCI 2970N2 on the 10 and 12 meter bands, with no "hack n tune" except a good service manual alignment done by Ranger with excellent results. I have been talking all over the world, even Italy yesterday. I have been consistently getting into central and south America and even Europe. I get constant compliments on the audio quality, even with the stock microphone. The radio has a true VFO that goes out to 4 digits IE 28.425.7, so no need for open clarifier on transmit. This radio is very stable on sideband, with plenty of power so no need for a cheap splatterbox amp.

That is the Icom IC-718. It is a ham rig that covers 160 -10 and has a lot of features for an entry level rig. I have a friend that has one and he loves it.
