I want to know what you guys think the best CB with SSB is? I really want something that has a 6 digit display and can be moded to at least 200 pep watts and still remain reliable. I have been reading about skip shooting and really want to get into it. please advise.

If you want the best sideband radio, an RCI 2950 or 2970 no doubt is the best. They're very stable on SSB, on AM they work ok.
Now if you want a radio that is great on AM but ok on sideband, an SS158EDX is the ticket. I happen to have one I'm selling. Think of it as a General Lee or a Connex with the addition of SSB.
Another good choice for SSB is an older Cobra 148GTL or a Uniden Grant.
Also just so you know, a SSB radio is not required for skip shooting, but it certainly helps. I've personally talked skip on a typical Uniden 40 channel CB radio.rabbiporkchop and Jolsen Thank this. -
A 148 and a 2 pill box is very hard to beat,148's have always outperformed the big buck rigs(many years) They are "really that good".
But,if your looking to blow some coin the 2970 is a solid unit(I have 2970DX and like it)
CB's are like race cars, performance comes with a price.
Big Horse Power and low ET's is fun . . . .
Or you can run consistent on a budget and put down respectable numbersJolsen Thanks this. -
i was looking at the magnum s-9 is it any good at cb and ssb? I really want something that has all the bells and whistles but want to be able to turn then off also

Those radios completely suck on SSB,they are not stable and there sound quality sub par. These radios were not meant to be SSB performers, just super trucker CB radios with all the toys.
If you must have echo and talk back then the only other radio to have would be a Galaxy 95T or T2. I have a few of these and set up correctly they work very well on SSB.
If you want to talk and be a top dog on ssb then you are going to have to live with out the echo to the moon,in your face talk back crap and get a RCI 2970 DX.These are built from the get go to be a top notch SSB radios and you will not find a better one unless you step up to a Yaesu FT100-D or Icom 706 mobile ham rig. Now you could get a Older 148 or Grant and have it set up correctly with a Texas Star 250 and that would do a fine jog but not as good as the RCI,I have a few of these as well and know what i speak of.
If your going to buy a radio for use on SSB and AM.......
YOU MUST HAVE IT TUNED WITH THAT IN MIND!!! THIS MEANS NO MOD KITS,NO SWING KITS,NO CLIPPED LIMITERS,THE BIAS MUST BE SET CORRECTLY,NO MORE THAN 100% MODULATION ON SSB,THE RECEIVE MUST BE TUNED CORRECTLY,THE RADIO MUST BE >>>>>COMPLETLY<<<<< ON FREQUENCY........THIS IS WHY YOU MUST FIND A SHOP THAT HAS A CLUE TO DO THE SETUP ON YOUR RADIO. IF THEY DONT HAVE A SCOPE,SIGNAL GENRATOR OR ANY OF THE OTHER PROPPER TEST AND TUNE EQUIPMENT THEN FIND SOMEONE ELSE.
WHY AM I SAYING ALL OF THIS TO YOU? I TALK SSB MORE THAN AM AND I GET SO SICK OF ALL OF THE POORLY TUNED ###### SOUNDING RADIOS OUT THERE IN DX. YOU CAN LISTEN TO ME AND THE OTHERS ON THE FORUM OR YOU CAN JUST DO WHAT EVER YOU WANT AND SOUND LIKE 90% OF THE GUYS ON 38 LSB,TRASHY!
YOUR CHOICE.Blaskowitz, mike5511, groundpounder and 1 other person Thank this. -
You don't want echo on SSB anyways if you want anyone to talk to you. Carolina hit on some good points, I'll bet he probably runs a RCI 2950 or it's bigger brother.
That's the first I've ever heard of a Galaxy radio being stable on sideband. They're notorious for frequency drift.Blaskowitz, Jolsen and Big_m Thank this. -
well i know basically nothing about ssb and dx but i want to learn and when i spend the cash i want to do it right the 1st time. i want something that will be heard on am and ssb. I'm a quite talker so i think that might have something to do with no one responding when i call out bears and just try to shoot the breeze. most the time i don't think people even hear me cause i hear them talking and when i try to chime in with a joke or opinion i get walked on. i been trying to find reviews and someone with a RCI-2970N2 in stock any ideas? I mostly stay on 19 but once i learn more about ssb it sounds more up my ally
