It'll work for you if you want to run on the 10 meter ham bands. Which you have to have a license to operate there or otherwise you can be fined.

If you want to run it on the 11 meter CB band, it has to be converted.

Does the radio have a freq. counter? if so, 26.965 mhz to 27.405 mhz is the CB band.

How do you know if it has mods? Did the owner mention them? A CB shop might be able to tell you if they know what to look for.

$35 sounds too good to be true for a Galaxy DX99V. Hope someone didn't sell you a crap radio with a burned final or something.

$35 for a 99, and your wondering if it's had any Mod's done to it?

Only thing I would be concerned with, is it burning my hand when I touched it!

Be CAREFUL! You may know where the radio actually IS, but if you are on one of the ILLEGAL BANDS, it could show 27.185 MHZ and still be OUT of band. You should be able to hear something on channel 19 since it is so busy with truck traffic. Once you establish WHERE the radio actually operates ON the CB band, you should LEAVE it there and never stray OUT off that "band".

The Galaxy 99V is ILLEGAL for CB and IF an FCC agent catches you with it (a minor risk), he can FINE you on the spot and TAKE the radio. The hams themselves take a very DIM view of "interlopers" on their bands and
will actively seek out illegal operators and turn them in to FCC!

IF you ARE hearing static ONLY, being ON one of those ILLEGAL bands (for you unless you are licensed) could be the reason you aren't hearing anything! You see, the lower end of 10 Meters is RESERVED for morse code and other digital modes ONLY. Even the hams may not use voice modes there. That's why truckers often think they've found a "quiet" channel to escape the hash and trash on 10 Meters. But there ARE NO "extra channels" for CB!!! Only the 40---which is why CB radios have exactly 40 channels! CB has NO "BANDS" so if you see a radio that has "bands" of channels, it is illegal right out of the box (For CBers).

Lots of info, I know, but you should know the score. Just KNOW that you actually ARE on the CB band, and you should do fine!

Go to a truck stop, turn it on, and see if you don't hear a bunch of truckers talking trash to each other. Then key up and ask for a radio check.

Is the radio hooked up to an antenna?
Do you know about the squelch?
