More CB/ Antenna questions.

Cobra 25ltd Classic

Ok, sql if you are thinking in terms of a clock starts at 7o'clock and ends at 5o'clock. To keep fuzz out I have to have the sql dial at 3o'clock-4o'clock.

This is mostly durring the day, where it seems noise is more, probably due to the number of transmitters running durring the day. But not sure.

Is this normal.....


Also I was thinking of upgrading the stock factory antennas on the truck, they are standard factory mounted fiberglass, truck is a newer volvo.

If antenna is set up right can I mount 1 antenna and do the same as 2 or do i need 2 antennas???

And can I simply utilize the standard mounts or should I use a seperate mount, only problem I see with different mount is the mirror covers are plastic and I dont want to damage it, and I would not have the mount grounded to the mirror without a jumper.

What is a decent antenna, do I want a fiberglass with an adjustable whip? Or a coil antenna?

Leave the expensive antenna alone. They are designed to sererate you from your hard earned cash.

Go with a Firestik or WIlson Silver Load antenna. Get the longest one you can run.

Get the best feedline (coax) you can. RG-8X. Beldon, ProComm and Times Microwave are the best.

One is all you need.

buy a coil spring type monkey antenna,just one big one needed,it's the best I have ever used,you can hear twice as far with it and get out great. less noise also.

OK, now both of you said I only need 1, do I then use a different mount. Like do I put a single antenna mount? And if so I will need to ground the mount via wire or strap correct? Or is the ground going through the coax enough....??

I dont think just using one of the stock mirror mounts for only 1 antenna would be prudent, correct?? If i go with just 1 I will need to do a new mount, as coax still splits...

Yes you will need a heavy duty mount and single coax cable, best thing to do is go to a trucker cb shop and have them mount it and match the swr. Look for the big super trucks in the truck stops,they have monkey antennas alot.

Don't buy the monkey made. Or the stryker or any of the open coil antennas. Get the Firestik or Wilson Silver Load antenna.

If you want to run the factory coax you'll need 2. I'd run a high quality single coax and leave the stock stuff alone.

Buck and a half you entitled to your opinion but until you can back them up with some experience that is all it is. And your opinion is wrong.

The point of all this is that these $100 antennas work good but you can easily out perform them for $30.

You only need to add grounding wires/straps if you need them. If they are un-needed you can do more harm (to your signal) then good.

Well still puzzeled on the difference in performance with coil and fiberglass....

I would get a swr meter and attempt to tune it myself, my mirror supports are plastic, will I need to further ground the antenna, and could I ground the new antenna to the stock antenna stud?


IDK, maybe I am best off getting 2 antennas and tuning them on the stock mount system, any thoughts?

The ground provided by the coax is not enough. But only add grounding if it is needed.

I am very familiar with what I'm talking about,we have a great cb stereo technician here in madison me.,been a tech for over 20 years.he works on alot of drivers radios in maine here. he does all brands and builds radios. he does one whole fleet of 150.000 petes here on the galaxy radios. The last monkey antenna he put on my last truck could here for over 20 miles with my uniden pc68,that was tuned by him. I could talk almost that far. I have relayed more messages to other drivers that could not hear them that far away. I just said it because its the best reception I have ever had in 38 yrs out here. everyone has their own opinion,I just know from him and my friends out here on the road. That's why I told him to go to a trucker cb shop.like live wire,if you know who they are. I can also refer him to my friend here in maine. He will talk to him on the phone if he wants. i have freds bus. card at home but not on me. It's up to him,I just thought he might want the best out there. Francis and firesticks are a thing of the past. I don;t run a linear either.
