The first thing I would do is upgrade the antenna.

Get a better antenna, then possible power mic.

As for modding the radio, this was just recently discussed on another thread here. You can send it to a reputable tech (haha, thats an oxymoron) OR get a small linear amp.

If you are looking for power, most on here will tell you to just get an amp, rather than chance a tech effing up your radio. I happen to know and trust a few really good techs, but they are FEW and REALLY HARD to come by.

That radio at its max is only good for 30 watts or so, realistically 25-30. If you are looking for more than that an amp is definitely your best bet.

so just upgrade the antenna, good mic and an amp and id be good to go? i dont need nothing real powerful. i use arkansas overdrive when i come off the top of a mountain, so just a 3 to 5 mile range is plenty

If 3-5 miles is plenty then get a good antenna and a power mic. You'll be good to go. For best performance get a SS 102" whip.

How do you get 25-30 watts out of Cobra 29 LTD? When it only has a 16 watt final.

Many of todays "techs" can get this and more with their magic dust and voodoo, fast talking BS and a "happy meter " helps them too.
