Uniden CB radios? Good? Bad?

I always have my cbs peaked and tuned, These days if you can't get over some of these guys splashing you on other channels and don't get 100% modulation what good would your cb do you. I'm willing to bet 75% of truckers are tuning their radios up. Also I always run 5 to 7 mph over speed limit, most of the state police will tell you what their limit is that will let you run. IT does matter alot over 11 hrs,it could be a matter of being unloaded on time,or waiting till the next day to unload. if you can perfform,don't be careless, and take care of your company and or dispatcher,it means extra miles and more money. I always try to average the speed limit as close as the speeds posted. if you run steady and safely on cruise you will save your time and fuel and be a very efficient driver. You run the speed limit and everytime you will slow for a hill ond lose more of your average time and speed to get there. in a week,a month a year. over the years amounts to days saved and alot more dollars made at 5mph more than limited speed. Done this all my life.,still enjoy it.

So, you fix the problem by adding too the problem? The radio comes from the manufacturer at 100% modulation or very near it. Increasing your Modulation over 100% sends your final (among other components) into saturation causing the spurious emmission I have spoken of, and your post that I quoted above, complains of.

Try this little test, get one of your buddies to stand by on 19, You go to 15 and speak. See if he can hear you bleeding over.......A properly set up radio wont......

Thanks for the adviseon the ground.Don`t know where I could dangle that long of a wire,without flapping or touching though.But I will try the other for sure.I`ll let you know the results.Thanks for ALL the good advise on the radios!!

I run a Uniden PC66xl and its been a great radio no problems.Good coax and antenna will help out the most. I also have run the older Cobras with no problems.

kccorey, you know your [stuff]. I would never pay forty dollars to have my uniden pc78ltw peaked and tuned. I calibrated it according to the instruction book and it kicks ***. I don't need to get out 80 miles, I just want to talk to the shipper, and yell at the dude passing me coming into my lane, or debate stuff with other truckers. Or give the bear reports and hear about where the bears are at when I am speeding 8 over to get home.

I was told the best radio at a good price is Uniden 78.

The best radio I ever had is the one I have now and have had for 10 years. It's a uniden grant XL. it's not made anymore. Uniden says they can't justify the side band radios anymore since they are majorly outsold by the 40 channels.
It's in the shop now but not because it's junk. I left it in a truck while anothr driver drove it (for 2 years) When I got the radio back it had a bunch of garbage added to it(connex board, talk back, channels) and he had some hack job tune done to it. They sniped the limeter and wired the final to the power plug which blew the final out. In short. be very carfule who works on your radio. Most of these truck stop tech are total hacks. a good rule of thumb is that if they don't have an osciliscope then don't let them touch your radio. it can't be done right on a meter.

as to the peak and tune vs stock with proper equipment I can say this. while my uiden is in the shop I have a piece of jund cobra 18 or something in there. totally stock. I hooked it up to the stock coax and antenna in my t600 and I literally could not get 250 feet. I could only talk across the median and mabey 75 feet up the highway. And if anyone else was talking just forget it.
I took that same radio and hooked it up to my good coax and astatic 3K antenna (I have both setups still installed in the truck) and i get out fine, peaople hear me fine. I won't talk 20 miles but I can get the information I need just fine.

I ran a Uniden PC66XL for years in the truck i drove. It is now in my Ford F-250. Its a stock out of the box radio, it works great. Good coax and antenna are the best thing you can do for your radio and get your SWR as low as you can. Good luck.

I AGREE 100% on the antenna & coax ! I don't agree with the CB "straight out of the box " talking & getting out as far as one that is modulating # 100% . It IS NOT ILLEGAL to have your modulation set to 100% .The dead key should not exceed 4 watts , & the radio modulation can swing to 11 watts & is still LEGAL! If you get your "straight out of the box" radio & it is only modulating # 25% how is it going to keep up with a unit modulating # 80 to 100% ????

BUZZSAW, I understand what you saying about modulation. Guess i have been lucky with the radios that I have owned. I do more listening now than talking, but I do understand where your coming from.Stay safe out there.
