radio problems

i have had two radiosa galaxy 959 and a cobra 29 have the same problem in the past four weeks. and before i get into it i will say my coax is in good shape and of good quality my mics three of which i tried including two road king 56's do work and my firestik antenna is nearly new and there is nothing wrong with my swr's

alright now all that set aside the problem i keep having is that the radios are burning up and no i am not keying them or nothing like that i treat them well they recieve perfectly but will not put anything out at all, i sent the galaxy for factory repair off today just curious if anyone has an idea what would make them completely quit transmitting but at the same time recieve perfectly and keep in mind these are two radios in about 4 weeks

your coax may be of good quality, but do you really know that for a fact.......?? it could be broken inside where you obviously can't see it.

the mounting stud for the antenna/coax can be corroded as well, or broken inside the female end, where the coax enters/connects to it.

also, the mounting of the antenna to the vehicle, is it properly grounded as well?

i would have thought a voltage problem (like spikes in voltage ), but i do believe that would affect both recieving and transmitting.

Did this problem happen all the sudden? Or does it take a few days? You said it recieved, but will not transmit, correct?

If it happed instantly then it probably was hooked up backwards....

If over a few days...and it still recieves then you have a bad problem with coax, or antenna and yea SWR...

If it still recieves...sounds like you took out the power final and this is caused by Keying up and talking with a poor SWR (above a 3) broken coax...or a bad antenna.

Also possibly you had 2 bad radio's..but highly doubt that.

Other than that you need to be more descriptive in what happened when you say they "burned" up, it is hard to tell what exactly is wrong.

Re: radio problems

alright the galaxy woudl work for two or three sentences if i would leave if off for 2-3 hours or so the cobra would not work at all and i guess it could be the coax doubtful though, they will both turn on and recieve perfectly just not transmit i was told by a not so wise radio shop it was the final in the galaxy i guess it may have been but how do you burn up a final when you never key up and thanks for the reply

Re: radio problems

These radios are designed to talk into a 20:1 SWR for 5 minutes. That is the standard. Tune it up and that standard is reduced.......Still it would take a pretty substantial problem to kill your radio that fast.

2 Things to consider:

1. WHo tuned them up
2. Votage spikes while keyed will kill a radio in a hurry.

Re: radio problems

That leaves voltage spikes. WIth out looking at the radio it is hard to tell. Wait until you hear from Galaxy, and then let me know what they say. If it is spikes we can fix that.

Re: radio problems

No, voltage spikes are your problem. What did you have it mounted in? And where did you get your power connections from.

And Last, What was your SWR?
