Re: New to site, lookin for advice

the D model was a improved model over the regular 100 and it didn't have alot of the bugs the 100 had it is a good radio also it can be turned up to about 150 watts right thru the menu which made it an exelent mobile radio allot of the guys i know used it mobile in the big trucks and it held up well. the 857d is the replacement for it with a few more beels and whistles and right now they areen't much over that new so shop around. the icom 706 markII and Mark IIG are selling prety cheap right now and they are good radios also for mobile first radios. if you want a pure HF base type the icom 718 is a very inexpensive starter radio that does one real good job i run one at home and with a good heil mike they work outstanding. Oh and keep working on the code. it will come to you after a while. remember if you learn it at 13 wpm letter and 8 to 10 word a minute word spacing it will be easier.

Re: New to site, lookin for advice

at the ham club i belonged to at the time i was studying the code we had a gag thind and i got a certificate for WAT which is worked all tapes i think i used every tape program every one had and just could not get it. i bought the code quick cd's and in a month i was doing 13 wpm no problem i passed the test the first time so it can be done just have to pratice and remember you don't have to copy 100% just enough to get the details of the qso to answer 10 questions at the end so either way it will work for you.
