I'm looking to bump up transmit power and considering the 3 options above. Any imput on any or all 3 would be greatly appreciated. I'm not looking for the most my radio can do. Just a respectable increase in power with ease of installation in mind as well as I want to tinker with this myself. Whether that be the rfx75 or simply just replacing the finals on the board with the mosfet finals which basically is what the rfx75 is anyway without all the added wires or adding a stinger.
I taught myself computers well enough to get a job as a tech 10 years ago. I'm a very fast learner, know how to read schematics and am fairly good at soldering on boards. Just want to be able to say I did it and plus I can't ship my radio off and go without for weeks.
I'm also looking for a good place to buy the parts necessary for the choice I go with and not wait a month for them.
Also any simple mods to increase receive some would be good too.
I might possibly be interested in trading for the necessary parts to do this if anyone is interested in what I have to trade. A cobra 25 classic that needs a little work. A brand new still in the box cobra s600 chrome external 15 watt speaker with noise reduction and variable talkback, and an old maxon MCB 45 watt cb with NOAA. Not sure what if anything is wrong with that as I just got it today and haven't powered it up.
I'm not looking to make out on this. Just get my 29 the way I want it and these items are all expendable to me.

I appreciate your input and reasoning WA4GCH but I don't much care for the extra equipment of hassles of an amp.
I decided to buy a new radio today and am having the rfx75 put in. Heard a lot of good things about them especially in the 29s which is my radio of choice. -
IF the RFX75 was that good every low power 10 meter ham radio would have one and it would be LEGAL ....
Do as you please but remember once you tear into a radio it becomes a problem to go back .... A amp can be changed at will .....Last edited: Mar 30, 2011

I'm sure the fact it would also replace the finals in a CB was not lost on the Magnum folks when they decided to produce it. (Anyway, don't they already build illegal radios?) The real problem is that it's usually installed by the "clip and twist" peak and tune guys on dirty radios. I see no problem putting it on a clean radio.
Having said that, I decided against the RFX-75. The KL203 is cheaper and I can use it on more than one radio.
ds1143 since you're doing this I'll just say that the little 12V fans made to fit on the heat sinks of CPU chips are only about the size of a 4 bit piece.

I did not fine it worth the time on my DR-03 and stuck with my 10 meter FM amp ....
