new comer to forum

Hello every one. I am new to this forum but couldn't help but post a big thank you to kc0rey it looks like he has started converting some of the CB'ers out there to the light. I have been a driver for over 15 years and a ham operator since 1998 and it has been one heck of a good thing for me. From 1999 when i got my general ticket till now Ham radio has been an addiction like cocain only good for you. I ran 14.302.5 in the truck when i was in the states and there is nothing like running 300 or 400 miles down the road yaking on the radio and never hear one bad word and not one smoky report or radio check un less some one was realy checking out a radio he was working on and haveing problems with. I have talked all over the world and the USA with an Alinco DX70 and a 500 watt amp into a screwdriver anntenna and worked 80-10 meters with it and especialy at night on 75 mtrs rag chewing with the guys from Ark and Tx from all over the USA it was great. I ran APRS which is a form of tracking for ham radio users and had people from all over watching me go down the road and ask me how i was doing and where i was going this trip talk about freind ships they never end. I am in Iraq workiong now and still run APRS and have a HF RIG over here and work MARS for the troops so it is a hobby that kind of takes over your life. as a matter of fact i put what i learned in ham radio to work for me every day since i am now the regional supevisor for communications for all of northern Iraq for a very large company so it pays off if you put your knowledge to work for you. so if you have any questions about HAM and trucking feel free to ask or any theory questions at all feel free to ask that is what we call an ELMER in the ham world one who teachs new people and brings them on board with all the knowledge they need to be a good Ham. Enjoy and look forward to answering any questions kc0rey doesn't or needs help with. so far i have to agree with most of what he has wrote. i only differ a little on my favorite cb antenna but thats user preferance i like the Francis and the old fashion steel whip of 102' but thats me and most trucks can't mount a 102' whip any where with out smacking bridges. Enjoy and thanks

Jay

LOL

Hi Jay and welcome to the forum.

Good post and thank for the thumbs up. I am a fairly new Ham and like you, I've been around radio most of my life. The old CB call was KHV6300, that was a very long time ago when I was a young boy.

I hope you enjoy yourself here, as I have.

So how bad does it suck over there in Iraq and what are your operating conditions there?

102" whips are better then a shorter 5/8ths wave, they are as you mentioned very impractical on a big truck although, you can run them on the mirrors of a T600 depending on the tire size.
