That's funny. I've personally talked on a stock Cobra 21 into a Wilson 1000 antenna and was able to communicate to another truck driver at 8 miles.
Another time I was sitting in my personal vehicle and was able to have a conversation with another truck driver who was 10 miles away. I was running a Cobra 148 GTL thru a 102 whip. And no I wasn't on the side bands either.
So if what you said was true, then there's no way I should have been able to have communications.
Also the FCC isn't going to come after you unless you end up flipping the band switch on your GL from D to another band, which then puts you off into the ham bands, and if a ham hears you and finds you and turns you in.
Best CB system to buy

You are pretty well dead on and hit the nail on the head. 90% time when you are stuck in a jam your beeing drounded out by your base stations and radios with big amps. I am willing to bet alot of these anoying bases are ham operators that over power most cb radios. I love having a radio that puts out around 100 watts. It will dround out the majority of the bases so I can talk well with in a 3 mile radius and up to 20 miles with little other radios interfering. I will never go back to runnng a stock 4 watt radio. In a truck to be heard and get out when you want a neeed to I thing you need a MINIMUM of 50 watts of swing. I just wish you could have the same antenna advantage the base stations have. But the only way to get buy them is with more power and thats even tough some times. -
LOL how many people actually sit on their base stations waiting for a pile up so they can rile up truckers? In fact how many people even have a base station anymore?
But such is life on the CB...if it's not people being CB rambos making idle threats or people being annoyances over the airwaves with "auuuddiioo" or "no panties on" or "bab-ba-booey", it's people trying to use power to out do each other. 100 watts is nothing anymore, it's only a matter of time where you'll need 1000 watts just to talk to the guy across the truck stop. No wonder CB took a decline years ago.
An amp = most often used as a band-aid for when you don't want to run a good antenna. You'd be surprised with the right antenna, what a 4 watt radio could do. -
A 4 watt rig with the best antenna will not talk across a 250 space
truckstop without a clear channel,if there are two or more talking
with-in 2 miles the little radio will get smashed until the channel clears
Its proven "DAILY" by those that have peaked and tuned rigs with decent sticks set-up the best they can,35 watts just barely gets you out.
-
You are correct. even with the best antenna on your truck and set up right you still got to have some extra power. That stock radio just don't cut it anymore. -
And just how much power do you think you need you need
I have worked GERMANY from the car with 4 watts ...... -
not on 11 meter so stay on topic
and try to talk "across" the parking lot on 4 watts.
-
NOOOOOOOO way. I'd love to see what your 4 watts can do on the road. 4 watts here wont get you across the median unless theres nobody else talking.
Maybe your 4 watts are bigger then my 4 watts. -
I can't speak for WA4GCH. But I already posted my results.
-
FACT range on 11 meters is the same as 10 meters watt for watt .....
There are thousands of HTX-10's on 10 meters working the world with
under 25 watts PEP ......
As for what i get on CB with my LEGAL radio I can and do talk to truckers
last time going up I-75 for at least 10 miles even on winding roads 5 or more with a HAMSTICK 7 foot wip .....
