Better radio would be a Galaxy 99 for me...awesome radio. Good in an off road dump truck? Not so much...they are known for cold solder joints and other problems from rough rides. General Lee is not a poor radio by any means, it will hold its own.

My preference for a dump truck, having driven them myself, is a Cobra 29. Plenty loud when tuned right, not over bearing when at the plant and talking to those within a few hundred feet of you. Plus the smaller chassis equals less board flex for the rough rides. I always ran the 29LX and had a great time.

But to answer you with the options listed, General Lee.

    southtx Thanks this.

Thanks for the advice, I am currently running a harley edition cobra 29 and I love it. Most of the drivers I run with are using 10 meter radios though and most run on the plus 10 khz switch, that's why I'm looking to upgrade. t

Just thinking out loud ... :biggrin_25512:

When I worked for the armor center ( Tanks ) we had shock mounts for our radios Now I know this would be far out for CB but I wonder if one could be built for trucks to deading the shock ....... at a reasonable cost ....

10K Switch is nice if a lot of guys are using it....might look into adding that to your radio by a local tech? Be a lot cheaper than $180+ for a new General, especially if you are happy with the Cobra 29 HD. Could even use one of the stock switches, like the memory channel or something.

Now, to get a little deeper.....what channel are they on when they flip the 10k switch? Its only useful on 5 channels....otherwise it just goes up to the next channel in sequence. 3, 7, 11, 15, and 19 are the only channels where the 10k switch will get you into a new freq. Now if they are changing bands...you will need the General Lee. And possibly a freq display.

You need to be careful. You NEED to KNOW exactly which "channel" you are on frequency-wise! Ten meters means exactly THAT! It is in 28 MHZ and it BELONGS to the licensed hams! Sometimes flipping those "band" switches puts you up in the lower portion of 10 Meters, and the hams don't like that. YOU, OTH, may think you have found a quiet channel where truckers can go to get away from the hash and trash. But most often you may be, for example, on 28.085 MHZ. That AM signal in the middle of the Morse Code and digital operations area stands out like a sore thumb! And the licensed people, the ones who have the licensed privilege of operating there will seek you out and turn you into FCC for action! It has happened before with such companies as UPS, FedEx, Superior Carriers, United Van Lines, Terminal Trucking, and a long list of companies over the years. How do they do it? They will monitor their frequencies in 10 Meters while driving to work, vacation, trips and other errands! Upon hearing a truck transmitting on 10M, they will then isolate the particular truck using a variety of methods such as waiting until one of them gets curious about the antennas on his car and attempts to hail him, signal strength, (attenuation of the signal using the receiver's RF attenuator), and what is being said by one or more trucks around him. He then copies the trucks' tractor number, DOT #, location, milepost, frequency, time of day, exit, and other pertinent info and forwards it to FCC. The company will then receive a WARNING notice that all such activity must cease or face fines of $10,000 per day! IF a driver continues to operate his illegal "10 Meter" radio and gets caught AGAIN, and that has happened, then it will result in those fines.

Now. On the other hand, if you operate your radio ON 11 Meters, stay OFF the 10 Meter band, you are unlikely to have any trouble! Just know that there are NO "extra" channels that are available; every frequency outside CB requires some sort of authorization or license to operate it! If you go onto the 10 Meter band---which is likely when you flip those "band" switches, you will one day find a licensed operator waiting to turn you in. It isn't worth it.

But this is simply information you can use to make up your own mind about it. Nobody is trying to force you to do or not do anything with this information. It is up to you.

and when questioned said driver can not produce a device capable of transmission on accused frequencies,IMAGINE THAT!
Like some driver will report to HQ with his radio in tow :biggrin_2559:
Split'them and Sliiiiiide to your hearts content, reported incidents are rare
    and seldom.

HAMS don't enforce or write rules .......:biggrin_25510:
And you don't know anything about radio .....
If you did you would know that .......

    AND ....

You would know that shock is a problem with more than DUMPTRUCKS ....
