Ok I have used and heard some of the more popular mics on the market such as the RK 56 the skythumper 65, the astatic 636 and others.

The guys that are using the rk 56 and skythumpers do not sound like themselves. Meaning, I don't recognise their voices when they come over the air. They don't sound the same as when I am standing in front of them talking to them. The guys using the 636 sound the same as when I am standing infront of them talking to them in person.

Most powered mics are crap, The guys that tried them had to turn them down all the way to get a nice sound and most of the powered mics pickup back ground noise from the cab. So they are a waste of money since they cost more and you have to buy batteries for them. I tried one once, the astatic road devil, used it once ended up taking it down and it bounced around in the cab for awhile and I ended up giving it away. Waste of money.

Another waste of money, in my opinion, are the eco mics. Eco is not needed on a good sounding radio. I don't care what the eco users say. I have convinced drivers to adjust their eco until they sounded the best on the air. All of them ended up with the eco off to get the best cleanest sound.

Just my opinion and experiences, take them for what they are.

    +1 on the echo
Reverb on the other hand makes all the difference in the world
    when used conservatively.

I would think a power mic is really only needed on some radios that do not come equipped with a mic gain knob....?????

Also FWIW I had an Astatic 636 mic and then I got myself a Skythumper ST65DX mic. I've gotten better on air reports with the ST65DX as opposed to the 636.

I guess I'd better get rid of this 1989 RK56 that makes me sound like I;m in my living room. :-(

i like the 636 because the teardrop design fits my hand better than the RK56. not to mention the galaxy radios have always sounded better with the 636 IMHO.
