In my haste, I failed to note the ratio of population vs amateur radio growth (or lack of it). The point was that the ratio in '59 would approximate 2007 when the population growth was taken into consideration. It's about the same.

Hey Gadfly what is a CB Guard channel? I was reading the net and seen Riley Hollingsworth mention it.

Ham is growing again. We had a Technician Class Sat-Sun and 50 attended, 39 passed the test and 10 more could'nt take it due to CAP duty. Laurel MD had 60 students the week before. I have 6 radios and have built antennas for around home but stick to store bught antenna for mobileRadioisICOM IC-706MKIIG, It will talk 0-50 MHZ and includes all the CB frequencies upper and lower sideband Am and FM. I can listen to Israel of Russia on shortwave and talk to Europe and the Western US. Total cost of Radio,Antenna, Powersupply, and Speaker $1030.00 and its built to Milspec. You can even do RTTY and, CW, (Morse Code) and Voice over Internet Protocol

Just as info, the use of the IC706 on CB is illegal and cause one to lose his license! This has happened recently according to fcc.gov. Not raggin' on anyone, just a passing fact.

He seems to have nothing to do but put down truckers and ride up and down the interstate where he lives looking to turn in a driver to the FCC. He is a ham radio operator or at least he has a lic. He also sells his antennas the Carolina Cyclone on a c.b. forum. Gadfly is a retired rail road clerk, I have read his post on several other forums and its the same old song and dance but most have just learned not to reply. Oh by the way I know his call sign.

As for me I went and found a few local hams here in my area and told them I was interestred in becoming a lic. ham. All I got was go take the test and then will talk to you. I am currently studying to take my test but I will not be joining there club. There are 6 of us that are going to take the test at the same time. I think in my area its time for some young blood to try and revive the hobbie around here. As for those old c.b.radios that have 23 or 40 channels thats what i like to do, more people on c.b base stations here than hams. Stay safe out there.
Mustang that was a good post. I've been a ham operator for 15+ years and I still like to get on my base CB sometimes. One of my radios if you are old enough to remember is a browning golden eagle 23 channel tube type radio. It is fun to play with and work on. Anyway just thought I had to complement you on your post.

The old "Screamin Eagles"....

I still have two "Blackface Courriers" stashed in the attic. (With the "A" Channels)

Still USE my Drake TR-4 and L-4B when I get in "Nostalga mode" on 75m.

Thank you for the kind words sir. Yes I like to play around with the older radios and I do remember the Browning Eagles. I have 2 old Stoners, 1 Tram Titan, 1 Browning Eagle, 2 old Drakes and tons of parts. I really enjoy working on the older radios. I forgot to mention the CPI that I have. There are lots of folks down here that still talk on cb base station and we have a great GMRS network. I do a lot of my communicating on 38 lsb. I also have a huge amount of the old crystal type radios and like to play with them also. Glad to know that you still get on the old cb. Take care and thanks again.
