WHY DO the HAMS always take over cb posts ?

Well mainly because they have gotten rid of all enjoyment and excitement of their own hobby, and deem it fit to try and do the same to CB.( Especially since they have figured out we CBer's were smart enough not give FCC all our info.......

Just go to any HAM fest and walk around.... You will probally answer this question on your own, with me or anyone making statements that could construed as cruel hearted.

Don't have to! If they want you, all they gotta do is find you, and it is easy as pie! If you put a signal on the air, it is just as good as "giving 'em all your info"!

Hams have WAY more fun than you can imagine. Like Joe Walsh---remember HIM? You know, "OH my Lord, .....in a flatbed Ford, slowing down to take a look at me!" Or. Shari Belafonte (Behrens), daughter of singer Harry Belefonte. Or Marlon Brando (licensed in France as "Brandeaux"), recently deceased. John Huston, deceased. (I bet he had "fun" making movies!) Andy Devine, deceased now, but I believe he had fun making cowboy movies AND talking on the ham radio! Garry Shandling, ham, and also studied Electrical Engineering in college. Art Bell, syndicated radio personality. Joseph Pevney, director of MANY movies such as "Man of a Thousand Faces", Star Trek, The Munsters, Bonanza, Fantasy Island,
and The Fugitive. Ya reckon he was one of those "bored old hams" who have no fun? Jeana Yeager and Dick Rutan, pilots of an around the world flight (1986) of "Voyager". Reckon they had no fun doing that? What about John Reynolds, deceased now, Professor of Physics, USC Berkeley, developed much theora that helped to establish timelines for the origins of man. I suppose HE was a boring old ham with no life, right? Shall I go on? How 'bout Timothy "Gaines" Hagelganz, bass player for the rock band,
"Stryper". Or how 'bout Stu Cook, bass player for Credence Clearwater Revival. Are THEY boring old hams who have no fun? I can name you HUNDREDS of hams who are movers and shakers in the radio, coporate, and industrial world--pillars of success in entertainment, business, finance, and their own personal lives. WHERE are all these CBers that have so much "fun" and do so much for our nation like those boring hams do?

Man i can't think of any thing more exciting than talking half way around the world on a piece of wire and a 9 volt battery and 1 transister. or talking to the ISS. or bouncing signals off the moon as a reflector to talk around the world on 144.00 Mhz. Or talking to a great musician or a great ruler of the a country like Jordan or a few guys stuck in ant artica for 6 months of darkness from a mobile going acrosss country.or keeping trac of your freinds all over the united states and the world with a computer and a GPS. and passing emergency traffic dureing time of emergency when all the other forms of comms are down we Boring HAMS were there to help out. Or beeing the commmunications for the clean up of the space schutle that scatered part all over Texas. Man these things are all exciting to me but i forgot excitement is setting in the truck stop and running 1000 watts to talk trash about something you have no knowledge about and bleed on any thing with in 1/2 mile of you because you have harmonics going out to the 10 level and no filters on anything except your cigarets. next

I don't mean to be unkind with this, but I wonder why it is that those "boring" old hams are the ones that get called on to help with disasters like Katrina (or a thousand other incidents)! I wonder why THEIR
communications WORKED while the official government communications gurus' failed. I wonder why they called on those "boring" old hams when the Twin Towers were hit ( they assisted for nearly a month while communications were restored)! I wonder why FEMA issued grants of $150,000+ to HAM clubs to purchase and outfit mobile communications trailers (example= Aiken County, SC). Why did they provide funds for emergency communications training & procedures to those "boring" old hams instead of those more "qualified" (ahem!) CBers!!!! Can you imagine it? I was a hall monitor in high school and now I am a post monitor, and you too can be a HAM HI HI HI (thats HA HA HA for us CBer's ) Oh my goodness HAM man, another illegally modified 10m radio is for sale eBay, to the HAM mobile CQ boy, before someone gets hurt(and hopefully not us)

Yeah, sure some of these people have exciting lives, and do great things, but, I f you were to ask the majority of them, most are not active HAMS.

As far as Katrina goes, hey good deal!, But we CBer's tend to take care of own back yard, so to speak.
And, we don't need Goverment grants to obtain our equipment.
( my 8 element beam $375 compared to $ 1275 for a HAM?!?!?)
I am not really knocking you guys, I know you geeks had to go somewhere in life, just didn't know it was going to go from hall monitor to post monitor ( and eBay too!)

BTW, you are quite mistaken in the price of equipment. There's another difference in many CB and the hams. More hams MAKE their own antennas than CBers do. Two meter J-pole= $15-$25. 2M beam often made of wire and PVC= $20. Wire dipole to cover 1.8 MHZ to 30 MHZ...........oh, let me see...........maybe $40 and most of that is for the coax or open wire feeders/ladderline! That is part of the attraction: there's an education to be had in ham radio we can't get down at Joe's Truck Stop and CB Emporium. CB is a consumer appliance; Amateur radio is an educational hobby!!!

So yer trying to tell me that that super-duper, whack-quacked, beeped and squeaked, over modulated "BIG RADIO" with them "extree" illegal channels and costs $475 is a BETTER value than the multi-band Amateur set that costs $1275? Hmm, let's see.

CB set= ONE legal band with 4 watts with which one has to "cheat"
to achieve the same result.

Ham multi-band set:

One radio with EIGHT "bands" of frequencies.
A general coverage HF receiver for 500KHZ thru 30 MHZ.
A 50 MHZ (6 Meters) transceiver.
A General VHF receiver for police, fire, and aviation
A UHF transceiver
A 450 MHZ receiver for police and public safety
A Scanner
And it will be WAY better built than any chrome-faced CB with noise toys and "echo" ever thought to be!!

Now, let's divide $1275 by 6= $212.50 PER unit!

Now let's assume Mr CB op is a real enthusiast-considers himself to be really into his "hobby".

So let's take that BIG radio he bought for $475.
He likes to listen to other HF shortwave stuff (many do!) so he goes looking for a nice General Coverage receiver new. Um, $600 more or less for a Sony or Icom.
even used, he's looking at $200.00
Next, he buys a scanner to listen to public safety, etc. $139.00 to $319.
No CBer is without his amp, right? $300 for "nice" one. The ham can work the world with 10 watts: many of them work QRP as a hobby in itself!

Add them up! He will have spent $1200 to $1500! What's the difference? Lets add up the 4-5 pieces the CBer bought for HIS shack.
Comes out to about $300 each! Which is the better bargain? LOL!

Of course, if he buys used, certainly it's going to be less. Same with ham.
I saw a really nice all-band Atlas HF transceiver at a hamfest last weekend for $350, but again it covers 8+ bands as opposed to a CB "export" radio with it's "bands" of illegal channels! It's apples to apples, oranges to oranges. Amateur is NO more expensive than CB really! OH! the Atlas 350 was a 300 watt input radio with about 180 out on average!

Amateur is no more expensive than CB---and WORKS a whole lot better!

Used ham radios that cover EIGHT HF bands can be had for as little as $275!!!!!!!! New ones for $700 or so (Icom 718= great entry HF radio that I would not hesitate to buy and use).

So the CB myth about cost is just that---a myth!! There's little difference in cost. And if a ham applies what he learns from the hobby, he can make antennas for pennies on the dollar with which to WORK the entire world with ease!

Hams know night and day more then any CBer ever will. Instead of just blowin as much power out intil you start to cook yourself, they use effeciency. I for one am tired with the cbers bleeding over all 40 channels to talk across the choke and puke. Listen to what they say. Theres hams that talk around the world with 5 watts.

It is very easy. Two weeks at one hour a night and you'll ace the test. Upgrade (like I did) to General Class and 10 meter is legal for you.
For that fact 160 meters to 200 + GHz (yes Gigahertz) is open to you.
It is well worth the ten bucks and a bit of study.

$600 for a used Icom 706 MKIIG at a Hamfest
$250 for an antenna tuner
$350 for an auto tuning antenna

Your set for the life of the equipment!!!!!!

I haven't seen an example of this so called taking over. I worked hard for my license and thoroughly love talking to folks and making new friends. No need for corny handles or abusive language. We do tend to be a little more critical than the average person when it comes to radios, but this is for good reason. I didn't just go to the nearest truck stop and buy my license. I had to study for a while to learn all that was required to pass the test. Then I had to shell out the bucks for the radio and antenna (over $1200 combined) then I had to set it all up in the truck. No I don't know it all, but I know a lot and just like everyone else have the privilege to put in my .02 worth. I do take my radios seriously, but am always willing to help anyone who needs it. We all need to remember that there is more to life than yourself and if you are the only one who is important, maybe you should invest in an island in the Pacific.
