It never fails , anytime there is a CB radio post; HAM operators take it over.
Yes , we can benefit from some of your experience , BUT it is NOT true that an untuned CB straight from the box WILL out-perform one that has been tuned . Yes , you can ruin a radio by turning it up too much & turn it into a BLEEDOVER MONSTER. But a CB straight out of the box WITH a good antenna system usually will not "get-out" across the street !
WHY DO the HAMS always take over cb posts ?

my cobra 25 with 2 good antennas has been getting out 3-5 miles during daytime and 5+ at night, and picks up big radios much farther away.

I must admit ......THE BEST PLACE to start your CB system is a good antenna , Mount & COAX !

The Ham guys have allot of good info on CB's and setup, they are sticklers for the power rules, but they take their radios much more seriously than I do. It is not a fault of the hammers it is just something that they enjoy and dont want ruined.
That being said, there are allot of radio;s that are ruined by people who are improperly tuning them, in that they dont know what they are doing and end up having a burned up radio in a few months.
I really dont have a problem with one who tunes a little, but I personally dislike these guys with the 100+watt amps and radios.

Being an owner of one of those type radios, I tend to agree, however...
It is more about radio etiquate though...knowing when to run full power and when to turn power and mic gain down so that you are not bothering everyone within 15 miles of you is more important than the radio itself...
...it is all about the operator, not the radio...

BRAVO steved ! Good post ! It's the operators who make the difference ! Just like ...Guns don't kill people , PEOPLE kill people.
On the other hand .........cb's don't make us stoooopid ----We're already Stoopid ! LOL (myself included) -

A lot of idiots just get their illegal 10 meter radios turned up to transmit at 60-some watts, then add a 1000 watt linear strictly for the sole purpose of maximizing the amount of people they wish to annoy with the myriad of childish doo-dads and noisemakers that they got programmed into their bleedover monsters.

I run a radio that has 10m on it.. and I do get out there, but I do my best to be considerate. Im also planning to just take it out of the truck, since theres been random DOT checks and Customs checks. Its just not worth losing ones job over or anything, as some employers, including mine will terminate over an FCC complaint.
Hams know night and day more then any CBer ever will. Instead of just blowin as much power out intil you start to cook yourself, they use effeciency. I for one am tired with the cbers bleeding over all 40 channels to talk across the choke and puke. Listen to what they say. Theres hams that talk around the world with 5 watts.Passin Thru Thanks this. -
That's because they recognize the importance of the antenna. When you turn up a radio that's attached to a poor antenna and coax, it only intensifies the problem.
