| Different bands have been considered for personal communications, back in the 70s, UHF band was the proposal, not sure of the freqs, GMRS radios are available now, also not sure of the freqs, Motorola is apparently trying to make MURS into another GMRS radio, at least according to the info on the website. |

| the bands well actualy GMRS and FRS are UFH and MURS is VHF the FRS is strictley simplex as is FRS but the GMRS is a licensed service and requires a license and does have repeaters available like the VHF and UHF of the HAM bands. they are just restricted in how they apply them. With the MURS it is legal to atach an external antenna and to have it high in the air like a CB station and you can also have a mobile station with an external antenna. So it makes it allot more flexable for the person who wants 5 or 10 miles of comunications in an FM mode radio. Also you can run digital modes so it can be used for things like APRS and other digital modes of comunications. If enough people would look in to it and start useing it like they have the GMRS service the cost of the equipment and the available equipment would get better. Then maybe the average person would use it and the 27 MHZ would self correct and become what it was intended for as a family oriantated band to talk back and forth between family members as they go about there daily lives. |
