So about a month and a half ago, I bought a 4' Firestik Firefly tunable tip antenna and a Uniden PC78XL radio. Took it to Deputy Electronics in Seymour, IN to get the radio peaked and tuned and have the SWR set on the antenna. For those who don't know, it's about a half mile east of the TA at exit 50 on I-65 in Indiana. AVOID IT!! Realized today that I seriously overpaid for the work and it was shoddy at best. Today, I took the same setup to Big Dummy's(yes, that's his handle) CB shop in Horse Cave, KY just off exit 58. I was just wanting to have him check my SWR because I had to move my antenna from the passenger side(where Deputy mounted it) to the driver's side. He asked me if they adjusted the "Ant" light on the front of the radio. Had no idea what he meant. He told me when a radio is peaked and tuned, that light should be adjusted, otherwise it will come on a lot even if there's no probs with the antenna. He cracked open the radio, adjusted the light and saw that there was a couple of things that the first shop failed to do in the peaking and tuning. Not sure what parts they are, but he stretched out a spring at the back of the board and cut a transistor just in front of the spring. He charged me $10. I gave him $15. Radio works great! Transmitting at least 5 miles, receiving about 4. Need to go back there and have him turn my receive up, but it's great! Highly recommend Big Dummy's CB shop. And he's super friendly and his buddies come in and hang out and will make you laugh your butts off!

Don't know of too many shops, but the Q5 shop at the 76 truck stop in De Forest, WI is one of the best. It's on US 51 off I90/94.

Until you work on enough high end models undoing the damage caused by things like volting finals, whack pack and super whack pack mods. Such mods are a norm at places like the one drivers dream shop (I will not name for the sake of diplomacy). Then the words "As you can see one persons dream shop is the next ones living hell" have never been more true.

I agree...sounds like you just got screwed by both shops. The last one...now that's some "shade tree" tweakin' goin' on.
rabbiporkchop Thanks this.
