I have the same delima as we speak. I'm using the ATAS-120 with my FT-857D. I can get a good SWR on all bands, but performance stinks.

When there's a will, there's a way. I suggested this to another ham here, and that was to mount the screwdriver inside the truck sleeper. Horizontally! Then take the whip over to an existing (?) antenna mount remembering that all of the connecting wire + the whip "counts" as antenna in this case. You may have to mount the screwdriver body down near the floor in the sleeper at the back of the cab (assuming this is not metal either) to make your grounds reach the metal chassis or something that IS "ground". You could also see if you can fabricate a metal plate as big as possible to put under the floormat to act as a counterpoise. There should be something that can be done. Maybe a metal plate cleverly concealed inside a door and mount the Sidekick on a nearby mirror, then take grounds over to that plate or to the frame. Just for grins and giggles, look at this website; [LINK POSTED BY MEMBER] Only Members Can View This Truck Forum Link. at a fullsized screwdriver.
