thoughts on cobra 148

Any feedback about the cobra 148? Im running a cobra 200, and am growing tired of its reciever being overly sensitive.

I think an older one is a very good radio. I have a Uniden Grant XL, which is the same radio, and it had been good. I have only had it a few months, picked it up on ebay. I dont know much about the newer ones, but from what I've heard, the quality isnt as good as it used to be.

Crankshaft, I agree with you on the overly sensitive receiver on some radios. I had a Galaxy CB that I COULD not stand ! Man that thing was static-y all the time . I cariied it to a buddy , he re-adjusted the receive (which alot of techs DO NOT DO) it is OK now. As far as the 148 , it comes from the factory with a very selective/quiet receive. It picks up the signals but, cuts out the NOISE . I have owned 3 of them & have been pleased . As I get older it seems I don't talk as much & I listen more . I prefer to hear conversation NOT static-y white noise!

Im curious about running dual antennas with a 148. Currently running a single wilson 5000 mirror clamped on a Century class. Cant do drastic alterations. Want the most reach I can get effeciently, without playing with a big radio. What about running a pair of wilson sticks, the long ones, what are they 6ft or so? Sittin in west memphis for a day, doc shut me down to let some meds take hold. I did notice the cb shop by the petro here had a couple 148s and an older Uniden grant XL used. Of course no mics included, lol. Think they want a 100 for the grant, and 135 for the 148s. Id almost consider a small linear inside the side bander if it could be fitted(sorry) to push thru some of the bs out there. Cant do much drastic to the truck, so limits what I can do.

I like my 148, but I like the Galaxy 959, better,I use the 148 now. It has great receive and does good on the output. I am going to use a 5/8 wave antenna as soon as I get a decent length of coax, I have an adjustable Firestick, it looks almost identical to a Wilson Silverload.

There's a service bulletin on that problem with the cobra 200 gtl dx. I can dig it up and post it for you if you'd like.
I've got one and really like it.

I run a uniden Grant XL and it's one of the best radio's I'v ever seen. I talk clearer and just as strong as the connex and galaxies out there. I have used this radio for base use and in many trucks. It is the best recieving radio I'v ever had.
Do NOT get rid of your grant or you will regret it. Most the amature radio guys I know LOVE this radio and snatch up every one they see on ebay so consider yourself lucky for getting it. If you do want to go to something else let me know, I'l buy it from you.
I had mine in a truck with another driver and he took it an had a connex board put in it and some other stuff done too. Where ever he took it they totally butchered it. it wouldn't talk at all. I JUST spent $90 getting it fixed. the final was wired to the power plug which blew the final, the connex board was ratteling around inside the case wraped in tape and loose, it wasn't even tuned up, it just had the limiter cut. Plus they removed the clarifier to put the connex knob in it which made is useless for side band use.
The moral of the story, be carfule who you let touch your radio. There is no license needed to work on radios anymore so any hack with a screwdriver and soldering iron can knock a few of there teeth out, not shower for a few weeks, open up a garden shed cb shop and call themselves a repair shop.

Id like to see that. I have a first gen 200gtl dx, no talkback, but has the 2sc2290s in it, visually inspected it. Hows the 148 compare in talking and tweaking to the 29 and the uniden 78, aside from the pretty backlit models or weatherbands?

I don't think it can be tweaked and tuned as far as the AM only radios on transmit, but the receive is better, which for me is what I want, I don't sit in truckstops talking on the CB, but if their is a road problem ahead I'd rather hear about it five miles before than after I get there. It seems to talk alright.
