I was just curious how many truck drivers are also Hams. I am new to both worlds. I will be starting trucking school in July, but right now I'm getting ready to study for my Amateur Radio license. I have a couple buddies that I work with that are teaching me Ham radio, and I find it interesting. Although my wife calls me a dork for it, I love all electronics. The next license test here in Cheyenne, WY is June 2nd, so hopefully 6 weeks is long enough to learn it. I was just curious how many other truckers are Ham Operators.

Ive been a truck driver for 24 years and a Ham Radio Operator for 12 years. Always loved making contacts during my night driving to other parts of the world. A good mobile rig and a good antenna will provide hours of fun for you.

When I started out for my Ham license you had to be able to work morse code at 13 wpm. It took me so long to be able to get that down that I continued to study the different class tests. When I finally went for my license test, I passed the 13 wpm code and all my tests so I started out at advanced class, hence my call sign, KV4DP, being a 2 by 2 call sign. I upgraded to extra class after the licensing structure was changed a couple of years later.

QRZ or eham both have practice tests that you can take to see how much you know. Keep studying and taking the practice tests until you start hitting 85%'s.

I just started studying the stuff. I don't have the $30 to spend on their book, so I rented an older one from the library. The book I have is 2006, and I know the questions are different now, but I figure the book is a start with the basics. I HATE reading books, but I can't seem to hardly put this one down, its that interesting.

Thank you Mad Dog 20/20 and Big_m for the test websites. I will definitely be needing those. Right now I'm still in the "Basic Electricity" section, and am getting slightly discouraged and confused. Its interesting, I just don't understand it. I will have to have one of my buddies break it down for me to understand. Oh well, I'm too stubborn and determined, I will learn this!

    Years ago ......
i was on a 2 meter net and someone said women were not smart enough to
get a general class license ....

The XYL was lissing and went to QRZ and within one month was ready to take her TECH license ... and ACE it ....
The next month she went back and took her general class ( which is why I went and got my extra ) and ACE the general ....

I put her on my radio after geting her general to sign into the net and the same guy was a check in that night ...... turns out he holds a TECH ticket ....

QRZ tests are very good at geting you ready for the real thing .....

Did she inform him that she had no ticket at the time he said those words? I wonder how he responded?
