Ok, ok, so my expectations were more than a little off. So just what do you guys think I CAN expect to gain by making those changes? I thought I read some where that a stock radio such as a Cobra 29 was good for about 1-2 miles with no tune & peak. But that all of the tweaks discussed would extend the range to 5-10 miles. What do think the real world numbers would likely be? How important do think it is to have what kind of range? Remember, I did indicate that I have no knowledge or experience with CB's. Just trying to figure out what's what, why, and whether or not it will, or how much of it will be important to me. Just trying to be as up to speed as I can before hand and not have to play catch-up later.

I think what augie meant was that if he were getting 1-2mis with a stock radio and poor antenna setup, and he did a basic peak to the radio with a reasonable antenna/coax that is installed and tuned properly, he could see 6-8 mis maybe... which would be a 400% gain from 2mis.

    Answer: possibly yes

short answer, have a good antenna/coax setup with low swr's, a good noise cancelling mic, then find a good technician (hard to find these days on the road), and have a peak/tune done, then you will have a good setup that will talk with good conditions 5-8 miles. just my .02 worth

Thanks, Rollingradios, that's exactly what I was saying. So with that cleared up, basic tune & peak, coax, antenna = 5+ miles, yes? As a newbie, that sounds like a perfectly (sufficient) good number. Am I wright? My general M/O in life is, I don't buy the cheapest piece of crap on the shelf because you get what you pay for. But by the same token, I think buying the most expensive thing on the shelf is just as big of a waste of money! Not interested in having the loudest radio on the block, but don't want to be disappointed or frustrated with it either. So if I go for the t & p, anyone know a trusted place in the Detroit area?

Really aug you could open the radio and adjust a couple of things yourself and be just as well. Need help with it call me and I'll walk you through it.

Maybe then you can tell me what truck it is and type mirrors and we can come up with some antenna suggestions that will fit your situation.

And hopefully (because sometimes things just don't work out well) you can spend money once and obtain the 5-10mi range.

I looked at that amp but went with the RFX-75 instead. All in one unit 4 watt dead key swings to 91. I have heard of people having issues but mines been solid. Like it's been said a million times before it's all on who installs it. And to each his own.

91 swing still doesn't carry nearly as far as an amp giving you 100 watts of carrier. Only way you'll ever hit 91 is of your whistling loudly into the mic. You have to really put out some sound to peak it.

Your carrier is still only 4 watts which is where you get your range.
