OK Guys I'm a retired old fart that used to CB but have not in years. Last week I got caught in a miles long backup and remembered that back in my CB days this would not have happened. I want to be able to listen to channel 19 for traffic info but since I'm in a small car without room to mount the old Cobra 29 I have I would like to know if you guys know of a small unit that allows me to just listen. I have a Uniden BCD396T scanner that i could carry into my car but would like a small unit I could hardwire in the car. A unit that only needs a small wire antenna across the dash or somehow patch into the car radio antenna would be perfect. Any suggestions?
How Do I Just Listen??

Handheld with a magnetic antenna. LEGAL in Florida
Yep have at it .... -
After my CB was stolen in 1973, I used a small device that plugged into the AM/FM antenna port. I could listen to CB on the truck radio and hear my coworkers commenting that I could hear them but could not reply. By turning the little box off, I could listen to AM/FM. Have you tried Radio Shack?

This sounds just what I want. Do you remember what it was called?

I very much doubt this was outlawed the power is too low. Moot point though, unlikely you will ever find it even on Antiques Road Show. Maybe, I've seen strange things on flea-bay. While I did have 2 or 3 of these over the years brain damage due to age has removed all knowledge of the name or model, but I do remember it was a Radio Shack item back in the 70's. I tore one apart in 76 and altered it by rewinding some coils so I could use it for a shortwave converter with an old Delco-Remy AM radio out of a 61 New Yorker. Worked extremely well.

also you can buy a midland 40 ch for $30. -
Are you sure about that Bruce? I think to be legal it would have to use it's own power, not the vehicles and with no external antenna.

[TD="width: 800, align: left"] Florida - (verified 2012) - Use Illegal installed or transported in vehicles unless you are either a licensed alarm system contractor, member of Press ON ASSIGNMENT (*note* that), licensed amateur radio operator, or citizen with written permission from Chief of Police or Sheriff or Chief of Fire Department of your community. As well, here is the Fla. Atty. General's Opinion on the definition of an "installed" radio. Going by the AG's Opinion, it would seem that a handheld scanner, not connected an external antenna, and not connected to the vehicle's own power supply (i.e., using it's own battery) would be legal while mobile. Therfore, I would advise Florida traveller's to keep the Atty. General's Opinion in the glove compartmentalong with as the Florida scanner law. [I think Florida is the only state that does it right and treats its citizens fairly and like they're intelligent - defining everything and leaving no room for misinterpretation or wasted or unnecessary lawyering. Too many states with scanner laws just say vague things and leave it up to the citizen to have to sort out later, and to deal with the expense of having to do that.

Buy a little Uniden 510 or even a Maxon at Walmart. They are small but do a good job. Use a Wilson Little Wil mag mount antenna. At least if you don't understand what was said you can key up and "huh"???
