I had a 959 it was a good radio I cant remember what it put out as far as watts but it was a good talking radio. It was stable on ssb, I talked skip on channel 38 lsb from Tx and reached out all over the East coast. I think its a good radio.I sold mine to a friend and wish i had it back may get another one day. Good luck.

40W to 55W pushing it... (that would be "not" anymore legal)

If you do the dual final or single final upgrade you might, but your not going to get 40-50 watts out of it on a bird meter with the stock final. Not without bleeding over all 40 channels.

The only way you are gonna see 40 to 50 watts outta 959 is to do a dual final conversion.
There is no way you are gonna see this out of a single 1969 final.
same board
And the mods for radio are simple, basically same board as the 2517 base ( of course minus the second final, don't believe me check board number and compare parts lists)

Good solid radios. But, no powerhouse in stock configuration .

Finals being added to a radio does not increase its power. This is a common misconception. They wont blow as easily if more power is added but they do not add power.

SOO, I guess all those dual final radios are a wastse?!?
Yes,as a bonus, the dual final set up does increase it tolerance to higher SWR, and YES, it does add power.

finals

Let me preface this with its all illegal any way but to shed some light on dual finals it depends on how they are in the circuit. If they are parrallel or in series. and it also depends on the transistor make up and design. all things are not the same to all people.
