Whats The Best CB Radio

I have used an old cheap realistic but i think i will get a Cobra 29 next

It's really all about what your looking for. Do you just want a radio to contact the shipper or other drivers around you with? Or are you looking for a radio that will walk all over every one around you? I have a General Lee which is a 10 meter radio and has to be modified to work as a cb. It get's out pretty good and I'm satisfied with it, but I've actually been thinking of going back to a regular cb. I've never had any problems running my cb, but I have heard of guys getting some large fines for having a 10 meter radio even if there using them only on the CB bands as I do. No 10 meter radios will fall under the power guidlines for CB's. I've been thinking of going back to the Cobra 29 LX like I used to have. If I do I'll probrably get one with the RFX 75 put in by a good CB shop. That way it looks like a stock radio and they cant just look at your radio and know its illegal.

like i stated in another similar thread. you can have 2 types of radios. the legal one and the illegal (not FCC type accepted) one. the only difference between the 2 transmitters is the cost being the number one obvious answer. the offered features will probably be the second choice. now having said that, it does not matter if you are on a $300 radio or a $30 radio, they all have channel 19. this is the channel that drivers have chosen to be the main one for communicating to each other (well the few that still use the CB) for directions, advice, bear reports etc.

your question about what one is the best? that is a hard one to answer. everyone has a preference. it is kinda like boxers or briefs, ankle or tube socks so on and so forth. of you are one of the tech savvy drivers and know all about the bells and whistles and are not bothered by spending 300 or 400 on a radio, then by all means go ahead and good luck. know the rules of where you can and can not transmit.

in the end, channel 19 is the same channel, on a high end expensive rig, or a 19 dollar yard sale special. hope this helps. just remember that the antenna and proper power supply and grounding are the 3 most basic things when operating a radio or any other electronic device. check your SWRs. carry on.

I've got lots & lots of gear, both stock CB and amateur, and I'm a licensed commercial tech, so I'm a bit of a "neat freak" about signal quality. Even with all the choices available, I've got an older Cobra 25NW in my van. If I'm on a road trip, it goes to a 102" stainless whip with a stainless spring. I *could* put in a Cobra 29, but since I'm not constantly fiddling with antenna things, I don't worry about my antenna (I can see it in my side view mirror) and I'd rather save the space. It gets good reports about its sound on the radio. It'll talk more-or-less reliably 8 miles to a similarly equipped mobile if the skip isn't rolling, and 10-15 to my base with its modest antenna (under the same conditions).
It won't "lock down" anyone else on the channel, but I don't get the point of that, either. If I *have* to talk someplace else and the CB is busy, I use some other method. I don't have to talk to shippers and such, so I have it to keep a "remote eye" on the road ahead and to pass the time. The extra antennas on my van garner enough attention from drivers to start plenty of conversations.

For those that don't know, Kraco really did make a CB.....it wasn't known as an exceptionally good CB, but they did make one. Fisher Price???? haven't seen one of those
