Setting up a mobile as a base.

I have a 40 watt power supply and my older Galaxy 44v.
The radio is pushing about 30 to 35 watts.

I have a Solarcon A-99 antenna that i'm mounting on my shop roof.
That will put the top of the antenna over 30 ft tall.

Will the barefoot radio be enough when skip is rolling or would a 200 watt mobile amp be a good upgrade?

Just something to mess around with on these cold weekends...lol!

If the power supply is only rated at 40 watts it may be a little small to run the Galaxy the amp rating of the supply would be a bit low.. You might see what the amp rating is on the supply it should be listed on the spec label on the back of the supply. Anyway as far as power is concerned you can talk DX with just the radio but a few hundred watts would make it alot easier to GET ER DONE... also a 200 watt amp would need at least 35 or 40 amp power supply if it's a mobile amp.

I figured the radio itself pulls less than 10 amps. That is the size of the fuse it runs.
It does blow a 2 amp fuse when keyed up.

The power supply is 40 amp continuous and can handle 45 amp intervals.

I was thinking of one of those Italy 200 watt boxes...they say they pull 20 amps.
Not sure how true that is.

Just putting this all together at this point.
Waiting on the Times Microwave LMR coax i ordered.

I got a great deal on the A-99......50 bucks new in the box!

Ok the amp is 40 amp not 40 watt that will make for a good supply as long as the specs are accurate sometimes power supply companies are real honest about the real capabilities of the power supply. It would almost run the radio and the amp but I don't like doing that I will usually get a 12 amp astron to run the radio and use the 40amp supply for the amplifier. I assume you are talking about the RM italy amps they are ok I have been servicing amps for 45 years and when the RM's first came out they had allot of issues but have improved on there quality control. Good luck on the base setup...

    Thanks vintech!
    Yes the RM Italy amps.

I will look into a smaller supply just for the radio.
Ebay has a few base amps but most are more money than a new mobile amp.
Buying used on Ebay is a 50/50 shot that you get a good working amp.

rule of thumb i have always went by when using a power inverter is 1 amp per 10 watts. when running a mobile amp on a power supply i would suggest a bigger than needed power supply due to the fact that most power supplys dont actually put out the amount of amps that they advertise.

I've out talked bigger stations than me. About a year ago, I'm sitting there on my Galaxy 2517 with a 250 watt linear and IMAX 2000. I keyed up on 28, everyone on the channel was hollering at me lol. But that should be a good station. Post pics of linear and power supply. We will have a better idea of what you have.

    Thanks guys,
I have not bought the linear yet but the radio was showing a 35 to 40 watt swing on its own.
I will get the antenna put up next weekend when my coax comes in.

See how it gets out barefoot for a few weeks while i shop for the amp.

If its swinging around 40, I recommend a ole Fatboy 2 pill (w/2879s) that's what I run now. I see around 400 with a 45 watt swing into it. I run it off of a 35a constant 40a surge power supply. Pyle is the name brand. P.S. ***ALWAYS*** BUY LINEARS WITH FANS!!!
