I guess most of the CB shops out there aren't worth the time it takes to walk in there.

Been to 4 shops in the last week, in hopes of finding some more flat-braid... not a single one of them has it. WalcottCB has it, but I seem to be stuck bouncing between north Georgia/SE Tennessee and Jacksonville, FL. (Seriously, on that note, if I never see I-75 south of the Georgia line again, I'll be happy.)

So, for ##### and giggles, I bought a no-ground antenna and tried it. Guess where the SWR is? :biggrin_25510:

I'm almost ready to give up, yank it all out and sell it. Not like anybody talks on the radio anymore anyway...

    Sounds like common mode current.

That looks like a good source, something they specialize in.

    I finally found flat braid!

Guy upstairs in the Petro at exit 161 in N. Little Rock had it.

Had a good chat with him as well, and the subject of clipping modulation limiters came up, to which he responded with a disgusted shake of the head and "You do not have to nor should you cut ANYTHING in a radio. Not a #### thing." Oh, and no Dosy-type meter to be found on his bench. Had a spectrum analyzer and a scope, though. Definitely keeping this guy in mind in the future.

It's called improper impedance, your antenna is supposed to be tuned to 52 ohms for proper radiation it's also called optimum power transfer and that is the point at which the condition, degree, or amount of something is the most favorable. The remedy is to makesure you have a good ground and yes doors really don't make a good ground so run an additional ground. Next set your standing wave (SWR) where you get less reflected electrons. Use a SWR meter to tune to proper wave length, you should be using ¼ wave antenna. Your impedance must be as close to 52 ohms as possible to achieve maximum power transfer. Your antenna radiates veridical wave form,if not veridical it causes the wave form to be out of faze there fore killing your lobe pattern

    Bump for update.

Well...I finally managed to figure it out. After grounding everything really well with flat-braid straps, I still had the issue.

Upper-spec'd ProStars have those pretty chrome-plated covers over the brackets where the mirror arms mount to the door. The upper one is quite large... and of course they're chrome plated, so it's a metal film over plastic...

Bonding this cover to the mirror arm with a short (2.5") length of flat-braid dropped the SWR down to 1.1-1.2 with my Barjan T-II mounted.

Not two days later, I got a message over the qualcomm saying my truck had been sold and I was to go to a trade terminal to pick up a new truck ASAP. :banghead:

So now I am in a '14 Cascadia, with a bird perch mount on the driver's side and a 5.5' francis on that (for now, until I can afford a Monkey Made MM-9 long, or similar) running a Cobra 29 LX. No grounding straps and the SWR is 1.3 on ch19. Not bad. No place to mount the Galaxy in this truck. I'm disappointed. Time to pick up a 929 or 979 I guess...

Our fleet is the Cascadia. Our trucks come from the factory with a flat metal plate on the dash with a strap. Some industrial grade Velcro would work to. Stick the radio right to the dash. Seen this done too: 3/4" board cut to fit the dash to your liking, a little velcro underneath to hold it in place, a piece of wood on the back of the board at the windshield to keep it level with the front of the dash, a couple of bungee cords stretched in either direction to hold it all in place and presto! CB mounted in a convenient place with no damage to the truck except a little velcro stuck to the dash.....you could even put some of that stuff you put in kitchen cabinets under the board to help hold it and protect the dash and forgo the velcro altogether.
