Uniden radios

Hi guys, I'm new here and new to the industry as well. I just graduated driving school, got my license, and am on my way out to begin my training with H.O. Wolding. Anyway, My wife keeps asking what radio I want for when i get my own truck, and I've got it down to one of 2. Either the Uniden 78 elite, or the 78 ltw. Is there any major difference between the two? i know the ltw has green lights instead of orange, and it seems to be cheaper just about everywhere. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Hey Iceman I have a Uniden 68 series for about 3 years now and works just fine. The 78 elite in my opinion is better because the orange light dosnt glare as much as the green lighted .

that's what I was thinking, at first the green lights looked cool to me, but looking at them, the whole faceplate is illuminated on the elite, on the ltw it's just around the knobs. the elite looks much better to me now, thank you guys.

I'm not sure this is true… I think it might have just looked that way in the pictures you've seen. I just got off the phone with Uniden about a half hour ago to ask this very same question: “what is the difference between the ELITE and the LTW.” Answer: amber instead of green backlight and a "better" mic on the ELITE. Since, I think I'll prefer green to amber, and since I'm going to buy a separate mic anyway, I'm planning on going with the LTW.

Uniden has good history

Long ago I was a radio technician for a CB shop (mid 1980s).

Uniden was just then coming out with their own line of products including CBs and some scanners.

Cobra, President, Royce, Midland and a few others were the big names back then. The secret was Cobras and Presidents were made by Uniden for many many years. The Cobra 29 and Cobra 148 both used Uniden circuit boards and they were fantastic radios.

I wish I had more knowledge of the state of CB radios today. If I had to purchase blind, I would not hesitate to buy any Uniden product.

I totally agree ! I own several Unidens ( pretty new ones too) I think they are very good quality & I have had NO problems with any of them ( Knock on my wooden head) As far as the 78 Elite the Uniden rep told you the truth the orange amber GLOW is less distracting but, the green is not too bright either . MUCH better than the BLUE lighting that everyone is paying extra for these days ! THE BLUE REALLY BOTHERS ME AT NIGHT WHILE DRIVING !!! And yes the Eilte mic is a pretty good Noise cancelling mic maybe not as good as a Road King or Astatic but a GOOD souding mic none the less !

I agree with Buzzsaw, the blue light are really bright and distracting at night. I recently had a Cobra nightwatch and found it to be ok at night. An Astatic 636L is a great noise cancellig mike, as are the original Road Kings, but I understand the Road Kings made now are a cheap knockoff, with rather poor quality.
