    Hey all,

Just bought a new radio again today. Picked up a new Galaxy 979 for 100 bucks.

Trying to find info on this thing is hard. I know it has USB and SSB, I'm not going to be using that, just using the normal AM in my rig. Did I make a good choice for a rig radio?

I like them, I don't have one at the moment but I am currently looking. Things I like:

-Good sound with standard power output (no big watts here, just the legal 4 unless someone tuned it)
-AM/SSB, with other built in features such as a dimmer, talkback and variable power.
-Same size as Cobra 29, not big like the exports
-Starlite faceplate (way better than Cobra's nightwatch)
    -Big meter

I like the Cobra 29 sized radios, I feel they hold up better to the ride than the big export radios do. I hope to pick one of these Galaxy's up again soon. Enjoy!

You made an ok choice. I say ok because Galaxys are known for cold solder joints and drifty SSB. The day may come like mine where it suddenly quits transmitting until you pull the cover and press on the board with a pencil eraser. Then it quits working again the next day until you open the cover again and get out the pencil. But they sure look purdy with all those knobs and that big meter. Not a big radio by any means. Of course since you don't plan to use SSB you could have gotten by with a traditional Cobra 29 for less.

I bought one awhile back. Seems ok for my uses. I'm not a big talker with a big radio by any means but I opened it up and turned up the modulation a bit. It's smaller chassis and front mic made it easier to install in newer trucks with smaller cubbies as opposed to the 959 I had. I like the dimmer although when turning it down at night the channel display loses some segments. Channel 19 looks like 13 when it's dimmed. I changed the antenna from the factory fiberglass to one of those coily metal ones and saw a decrease in swr and an increase in power on the meter for what that's worth. It doesn't seem to receive as well as an old Cobra 148 i have, but it works well enough for me to hear traffic back up reports and talk to shippers/receivers if need be. That's really the only reasons I have one. As Turbo-T said, a Cobra 29 would likely work just as well for me, but I like the blue display.

edit: In fairness, the 148 I have was given to me used. It has had and echo board installed and who knows what else done to it. Possibly a rec. mod as well I don't really know. It's a spare.
