Do a search on state scanner laws. A ham radio license exempts you in most states. Technically, a ham can have a radar detector with him too. The two "bands" X and K are actually experimental ham frequencies...

If you decide to take a scanner with you, you will need a top dollar APCO25 trunking scanner. Many jurisdictions are now on digital trunking (frequency hopping) radio systems now. Plan on spending $400 to $500 for a good scanner...

    Ya telling them too much:biggrin_2551:

But you are correct! I had 20 drivers at a truck stop trying to argue with me about the X and K bands, as not being in the radio spectrum! I excelled over their meager aims by providing them the simple facts.

Yes but not exact Mr. delta 5! Good APCO25 Digital scanner(s) are from Companies such as Motorola. Their 6-7 digit series of radios will set u back used $450-$650 new up to $1000.00 plus you got to give a Moto-dealer valid reason to program it for you. Next up and no dealer programming BUT YOU HAD BETTER BE DARN NEAR A ENGINEER to program are the: I list from top to bottom ranking-

*Except for the PSR 800, the following digital police radios can be found for $275used to $550new..

    1. GRE PSR 800 which is the only hobbyist scanner to decode TDMA2. Unfortunately the Company went out of business but word has it that Whistler Radar Detector has just purchased the rights to GRE and will be offering new and hopefully updated versions first qtr 2014!
also see the GRE PSR 600 and PSR 500 series still available on the used market. Excellent digital scanners. OOps, I failed to mention that the PSR 800 requires you only enter the zip code.
    2. UNIDEN HOME PATROL 1: which is also a Digital Scanner, but does not decode TDMA2. Requires only entry of your zip code.
    3. UNIDEN 996XT: can be used with a GPS (as the HomePatrol). Very good reviews. Also see Its lil brother the handheld 396XT
    4. Radio Shack Pro 106 and the PSR 800 cousin Radio Shack Pro 18 (apco25).... 2, 3, & 4 do NOT decode TDMA2!!!!

    happy scanning day to you!

This topic was brought up about a year ago and I tried to tell them that with today's trunking technology and with laws and technology issues, the OP may as well forget it, and some called me a moron ... said they scan trunked channels all the time, piece of cake :biggrin_25523:
