Unstable radio frequency?

I have a galaxy 959 that has been peaked and tuned. Lately the frequency cycles up and down. It will settle at 10.695 and if I tap on the bottom of the radio it will return to 27.185. I was told it was probably a broken circuit board due to driving on dirt roads every day. I took the covers off and inspected everything with a magnifying glass and could not find anything broken, cracked or loose. I was wondering if it could be a problem with the power or ground for the radio? Due to the lack of radio shops in my area, I may have to send it to Galaxy for repair.

Funny thing about getting a radio "peaked and tuned"...That usually voids the warranty. Don't plan on getting away with Galaxy fixing the radio under warranty. Gonna cost you some $$$.

You probably have a chip loose in the board somewhere and that is usually not visible to the naked eye. Even if it is, you will still have to get it fixed and as you said, you have no local repair shops. Might be easier to get a new one.

Thanks for the replies. My old radio is a uniden 78. I took it to Mesa CB in albuquerque and had it peeked and tuned. I also purchased a 4 foot Francis antenna. I am pretty happy with that set up, the voices sound very clean and clear. My only grip is the uniden won't reach as far out as the galaxy did. However I like having the weather band since I live in tornado alley. The last tornado that came through knocked out the local radio stations but I was able to listen to the tornado spotters on the weather band.

So you did not bother to get the Galaxy looked at? A cold solder joint is not hard to fix and is way cheaper than buying another radio. And Galaxy WILL work on your radio and may even honer the warranty, they have on all of the radios that i bought new, modified or not.

I wonder how prudent it is to "fix" a $160 Galaxy 959 radio. Even under warranty shipping charges eat quickly into the radio's worth. A dollar saved is a dollar earned (remember when we use to say penny), but keep an eye on the possible better value of new gear. Unless you are handy at circuit repair using the good clues mentioned in some of the other posts, I would just dump it and get fresh gear.
