| Unfortunately, my CB handle's Tea Cozy. I got that nickname because I wear a plain olive-green heavy-gauge Shaker-style knit toque in the winter. While waiting to load at a large courier hub in Rexdale, ON, I struck up a conversation with an driver who'd immigrated from Scotland through a military retirement transfer to western Canada. After being honourably discharged from the military, he applied with a large Canadian company that actively recruits immigrant drivers and helps them assimilate into Canadian society. I broke from the conversation momentarily to speak with the shipper about my paperwork, and when the shipper left to look for it, the driver got my attention again by exclaiming, "Hey! Tea Cozy!" I turned, laughing, and demanded, "Did you just call me Tea Cozy?!" Later at my terminal, I told the story to the security guards while signing in, my brother (who also drove for the company), and one of the night dispatchers. Everyone, knowing my toque, thought it was hilarious, and the nickname stuck. Eventually it became my CB handle, for fun. I still wear the toque. People make fun of it, and I tell the story, and the nickname spreads a little more. When the mechanics at my current company poked fun at my toque, I told them how it inspired the nickname Tea Cozy. The older mechanic glanced up at my toque, appraised it for a moment, and an understanding grin slowly spread across his face. The younger bachelor mechanic pointed and laughed at him, exclaiming, "Ha ha, I can tell you're married!" |
