So my girlfriend just bought a 2014 Jeep Patriot. She actually asked about putting a CB in for our long road trips and some possible light off roading. Well I dug through my collection and came up with a virgin very clean Cobra 29 LTD Classic. Picked it up from someone who bought it and didn't get into CB, a while back. I like to have sideband available so I was OK with letting it out of my collection. Now I could have put it in as-is but what fun would I have? watt

    I have done the following:

2SC2999 receive transistor upgrade. Schottky barrier diode replacements. Pre-amp installation. Variable power on transmit. Modulator. 3 band channel expansion, 40 above, 40 below. 10 KC jump. 150 watt stinger board.

Kept it all "in the box" as the girlfriend did not want a bunch of equipment installed. Upgraded the power cord to a 10 gauge dual fused power cord. Running power direct from the battery.

Have received excellent reports on audio and carrier. It really has some great "ears" too.

Only the channel and Amp were kits. everything else was straight parts. I opted for the stinger instead of the less expensive MOSFET upgrade as I wanted more power without an amp. Running a MOSFET with the amp was out of the question as it would overdrive the amp and blow it up. Also I like the idea that if the amp does go out I can hit the switch and still use the radio at 4 watts.

I have owned a bunch of export rigs and done some of these mods for other people in the past. (Used to work on CB's on the side before I had an accident that damaged my hands.... work goes real slow these days!) Have to say this radio will give those exports a run for the money. Cost was pretty low too...

Nice compact setup too. Think I'll do a similar workup for my 148 next!

In NY myself and would gladly send mine to you if it's an option. Hell you might be close enough to drive it to you.

I will post pics. It's all buttoned up now but I am waiting for a new meter as the one I was using on the bench crapped out on me. When I get my meter I will open it up for yet another mod. Slide on transmit. When I do this I will post pictures. Should be by next weekend.

Also I have to apologize. I cannot in good faith do this work anymore. I had a blowout on CR97 out in Suffolk county 3 years ago. Lost part of my left hand and badly damaged the right. I have little to no feeling in both hands. It took me a long time to get this radio going. I would be concerned about causing damage to someone's radio. As this set was already in my collection and time was of no concern I did it myself. I am really sorry as I used to love working on radios. I modded a number of radios at no charge for my neighbors who were into the hobby over the years. Too bad you guys didn't catch me back when I still had 2 good, steady, hands.
