Not true. The Galaxy 959 does have a real freq counter, although it looks cool, it is basically just there for show...
Galaxy 959 w/extras. Are they worth the extra $$$$?

honestly a 959 just isn't all that to begin with so why waste your money on a not too good radio? i own a 959 and it isn't worth the new stock price, much less $360. find a good used 99.
-
For $360 if you know where to look, you can pick up a used Galaxy 98 VHP that will BLOW that hacked up 959 out of the water, over the hills and far away.
Very true....echo and blue lights don't do squat to help you get out....both are just trucker toys....and not needed....
If you want range, get a good antenna and coax. That's 95% of your radio right there.....
Going off of a limb, I can make a cheap Uniden Pro 510 walk with the big dogs.....granted it means a 102 whip, RG8X coax and a 1.2:1 SWR.....yes I know that's an overkill for 99% of the truckers....but the point is, it's the best antenna for CB so it is very efficient. The Sirio 5000 or the Wilson 2000 would be next in line. -
OK... technically a counter. But due to it's lack of real accuracy even Galaxy avoids calling it a frequency counter. If you refer to the service manual you are told to use an external counter for alignments. Sorry but basically it's junk. It looks nice but it's not dependable. Makes the rig LOOK like some high quality ham equipment, But in short.. it ain't.
Yeah I might be a bit nitpicky but I want functionality over cosmetics. Gimme a 148 with a decent inline counter any day. -
Other than the use of sideband I am not a fan. I get more compliments on my tuned up cobra 29 than I do with my 959. Thought it was a good radio at 1st but after getting work done on my Cobra 29 I am disappointed with the amount of $ I spent on the 959. Running good coax and a wilson 2000

I agree with you. OK I might get publicly stoned for this but Cobras are better made than Galaxies in my opinion. Yes they may share the same components in some models and Cobra quality is NOT the same as it used to be... BUT the final assembly, tuning and inspection is just better. Galaxy is notorious for shipping out radios poorly aligned and tuned. Many radio shops recommend that you align and tune your galaxy when you buy it from them. Galaxy has had periods in their past where they were caught using substandard or weak transistors. But that was a while back and has not been seen lately. As I recall they along with others like Superstar used the infamous Green finals many years ago. Many buying those radios decades ago just replaced the finals when they bought the radios. Saved trouble later. Much like those that buy Galaxies today and have them tuned and aligned before they ever use them.
Yes they no longer do some of this but I have a problem buying a radio produced by a company has been historically so intent on cutting corners. -
darthanubis Thanks this. -
That guys nuts. If you want to be heard this is what to do and still have money left to get a good mic.
get your 29 t&p by a good shop. Have them set your dead key at 2 watts make #### sure they do not cut out the modulation limiter and get a Texas Star 350. Nice clean little 2 pill and you should swing around 200 watts and that set up will give you many many trouble free years of use. -
