Echo and Crisp/Clear at odds

I honestly do not know if they are legal or not. I suppose if they are installed inside the radio, this might void the FCC certification for that make/model and that certainly is not legal. If it is a unit that goes between the microphone and the radio that's probably ok. The difficulty lies only in proper microphone wiring and, perhaps, some power connections.

You are wise to take the time to install the echo device correctly to show folks "how it's done."

However, a crisp clear sound uses just the radio and a good microphone. Anything that messes what that audio ideal gets away from crisp and clear.

I do admit, though, a slight echo sounds cool so if that's what you want then go for it with an external unit of some kind.

Have fun.

I doubt an echo board installed inside the unit will void the type acceptance. The board is electrically still between the mic & mic input to the radio.

There may be an issue where the rules say you can't transmit anything designed only to be an "attention getter" or for use in malicious interfering.

I find it odd they would specify an "attention getter" when tone access was allowable to alert someone on the receiving end that they were called. Go figger?

There's evidence, as depicted in some radio broadcasting journals & texts, that a small amount of echo actually enhanced the recovered audio in a way to make it easier to hear the station better in weak signal areas.

As I recall, empirical testing showed that 30% or less modulation of the most pronounceed echos as the best setting to enhance the intelligeability of the weak signal.

I doubt anyone sets their echo boards for anything below 30%. That's why you continually have to ask "What'd he say?"

I'd rather put in a 150-200 watt amplifier to make myself heard in the distance. Done correctly, no one says huh? What'd he say?
