Out of the box, yes. Gone over by a competent tech, no.

Hey Mike5511, your Inbox is full!

I was trying to respond to your message a it's telling me the "mike5511 is way too popular and has received too many messages. He needs to delete a few before you can send him one."

I think that's what it said. Or it may have just said that mike5511 ' s inbox is full. I like my version better!

I will add that on my new 979, P&T'd by DTB Radio, I was talking to someone in Harrisburg, while sitting in New Kingstown... (PA) that's 15-20 miles...I'd hardly call that "crap" but that's just me.

You can work the world with 4 watts on a good antenna system, likewise you can struggle to get out 1/4 mile with 80 watts on a bad antenna system, i.e. factory Cascadia. And that's no joke - I spoke with one of our other drivers, who had a Cascadia, with Wilson Truckers in place of the factory antennas, but no other mods, and an 80 watt Stryker. I didn't believe him when he said he couldn't get out across the parking lot, so I called out for him as I was leaving the place, while he was still in the lot - when he responded, he was barely giving me an S-unit and a half, and I couldn't have been much more than 1/4 mile away.

Maybe I got a lemon. I have a competent tech I have used for 20 years. I use a single Wilson 5000 that's set right. I got good coax and believe that my cobra 29 that's was set up by the same guy worked 10 times better.

It's possible. I've heard of numerous QC issues with the earlier 979s, especially those with the red channel indicator and white meter light, which supposedly have been tightened up in the more recent units.

I know this thread is over a month old, but I am wondering if the 979 with an RFX-150 would be decent, or just stick with my Cobra 148 and by a kicker?

I picked up a used and slightly tweaked 959 about a month ago. Putting out 43 watts for $140. Radio is great, antenna in my Cascadia sucks

That rfx150 is not a good kicker for ssb I've heard of a few good techs making it work but its just not designed to work with ssb which I'm guessing you want to use since your considering the cobra 148 gtl
