I m just returning to trucking ...I like a big radio and have two radios... Galaxy mirage 9900 ( cost me big $$ in the 90's) and a cobra that I put big $$ in ....both don't work now. should I put them in the shop or spend my money on a new radio? Both were "worked on" and it seems there is a common denominator....both worked on ...both don't work... $$$ is not as important as quality ....good sounding...good receiving... Thanks in advance for your time

Well you don't say where you are located. I would fix them and use them if they were mine. Course I have a very good tech near me that doesn't over charge folks. I would be interested in buying them if you decide you don't want to fix them. I'll bet you can get both going again for under $100.

Stryker 497hpc is my radio of choice I also liked the magnum raptor 3 but the 2 brand new ones I had would be overloaded when near anyone with 50+ watts even with the rf gain off I'm sure they worked that bug out by now though

What do you mean they both don't work?

One reason to find the simplest radio out there is just to save money.

I have a few on my short list and you all would think they are all stupid but they work, and sound great.

I am curious about this, if your rig is so sensitive that you are getting slammed with just 50 watts near by, then two things come to mind, it is not a really good design (which most of them are not) or that the thing is improperly aligned and the AGC circuit has issues.

By the way after 45 years of cb design, I hope by now they would have worked all the bugs out.

It was the raptor magnum 3 that had the problems 2 brand new ones did the exact same thing this was within the week of them hitting the shelves in the cb stores. They gave me my money back without any problems

If you want be heard, the SR-655HPC has the power required to do some serious talking. This is the same final output section used in the SR-955HPC, which proven itself to be extremely reliable.

Currently, the best new radio for the money is the Cobra 29 Classic at a T/A or Petro during the months of July and August 2014. Costs $99.99 plus tax and has a $30 mail in rebate. So for $70 plus tax you get a new Cobra 29 Classic radio with a warranty. Best deal I have seen this time of the year.

I agree, I can change a few transistors and a couple of diodes, readjust the choke, plug it into my Motorola R2200 and make it sing loud and proud, crystal clear. Cobras have always been a very good value for dollar spent, and with fuel credit they can be really affordable. I also get very good sinad readings when tuning there receivers. Add a good noise canceling mic hard to beat.
