Okay, every occupation has its own lingo. I am trying to learn some of the CB lingo. My housemate is expecting me to talk on the CB when he can't for whatever reason, and I don't want to get laughed out of the country because I don't know the lingo and am not making sense. Can someone help me forward my education on CB talk, or is that something I will just have to pick up as I go along? I may be a greenhorn, but I am trying to pull myself up to speed as much as possible before my housemate and I hit the open road. I know what these mean: bear, bear in the air, silver bullet, chicken coop, choke and puke...

I would suggest watching "Smokey and the Bandit" a couple of times, but stay away from "Smokey and the Bandit 2" as that one is just plain silly. Maybe "Convoy" with Kris Kristofferson and listen to the C.W. McCall song as well, and you'll be good to go. Take notes if you like.

Step two, throw away your notes. No one uses much CB lingo anymore. As long as you speak clearly and politely on the radio you'll be a step ahead of 75% of everyone else, and the folks worth talking to will recognize this and respond.

I think you are being kind with 75%..More like 90%. A lot of people still use the lingo like full grown or full grown bear[state trooper], evel knievel[ motorcycle cop etc, but other than that it's just talking to someone in public and don't mind the idiots whispering I ain't got no panties on and such. They just have too much time on their hands.

Whatever you do, never, ever use the term 'good buddy'. It does not mean what it once did.

Most drivers ask for a radio check in the morning and then only turn the cb on 10 miles or so before a scale and shut it off once they pass by it

Okay, I can deal with that. It seems I don't really need to learn the lingo as desperately as I originally surmised? I have seen both Convoy and Smokey & the Bandit. I am just glad that I won't seem like such a greenhorn. Politeness seems like it goes without saying...my grandmother would crawl out of her grave and slap me hard if I were rude to anyone! That could get scary... :)

"Help I have a Granny Zombie on my tail"

"Is that some weird term for police?"

"No really my grandma left her grave and is currently chasing me!"

And that's how the zombie apocalypse happened.

Moral of the story is always be polite on the CB.

Do yourself a favor and stay off the CB. It is not a pleasant place for ladies.
