So I just bought a Roadking C4 (RK5640). I like the traditional feel of the radio but until in get it tuned and my firestik from the house installed to replace the stock antenna I've no idea of its true performance. For $30 more I coulda got the Bearcat 980.

Could someone that has used both or just knows more about cb's give me a low down on a comparison between the two (when they are tuned up and a good antenna)? Would it be worth the extra $30?

I like my 980... No tune, single Firestik, Cobra power mic... Life is good.

What is your range with it? I'm hoping for 5 miles at best, at least 2 miles although I won't argue with greater than 5 miles.

At least 2 miles easy. Everyone says it sounds real clear and clean.

I got a 980 because I wanted a smaller footprint SSB CB. Other than only having a local and distance switch for rf gain, I really like it.

The 880 would be the same except non SSB.

It's a nice CB but I miss my Cobra which I had to abandon at my previous employer

There is a row of push-button switches on the right side facing the radio, the AM/USB/LSB is towards the bottom of the row, it is marked and backlit, and pushing the button once will put you on USB(upper sideband) and pushing it again will put you on LSB(lower sideband), the call channel and usually most active is LSB channel 37. The clarifier is nice, outer knob below the stack of buttons is coarse, and inner knob is fine, the outer has a detent for centering.

Pushing the band selector once more puts it back on AM.
