I dont know about percentage ratios I was taught in the real world, Not saying its wrong or bad just saying the world of commerical radio is more blood and guts results than textbook expermenting, though most commerical techs I know are also HAM's. I suppose when examining each stage the amount of gain in each stage is and can be ball parked with perecntage of gain, I dont use it for the overall though. Thats just me.

This is how I was taught to tune a amp or a radio ( same thing as far as power is concerned ). If Im using my monitor I tune each stage for maxiumum clarity while monitoring the output (isolating it if necessary), kind of like the old peak/dip, peaking each stage, if amp amp is part of the system, I leave it disconnected until Iam satisfied if the performance of the radio it self, turn the radio final down, connect the amp and repeat the process.

The last thing in tuning after peaking the power is to adjust the audio levels up till (well I call go digitial ) the tops of the sine wave start to square then back it back down till its nice and round. That will be the max audio and power that system can produce cleanly. I dont use a spectrum analizer for this type of tuning, although the more things monitoring the transmitter the better.

As far as the actual power out thats is really a by product not the goal. The goal is max clean power. Sometimes it does require the changing of a couple of caps, diodes, finals or a choke. After all adding a amp is really just adding another stage to the exsisting chain, you have to make sure of what you have before adding to it.

Just to be clear that these anyone can install it quick audio junk performed by the local radio hack normally shortens the life of the radio, they like to crack up the dc power to the audio and rf finals past the max for the stage, loud, dirty, and trashy. I have checked out several of the loud audio kits and find most of them to be a rip off, some do nothing at all.

Be very leary of vans and morehomes hanging out around truckstops. Opps I broke quess you can have both halves.

Sorry for the ramble. got to go get my load at Rauls Burittos in Tulare....

I agree thats a Pill, not to be confused with a flatpack or a Pll.

You are absolutely correct; however, I was referring to the game played with the power out and modulation adjustments to give a bigger "swing" to the wattmeter. Turn the power down to 2W, then crankup the modulation to 20W. Looks impressive, but it sounds like... crap.

Im sorry, could not agree with you more, Truckstop & Ebay hacks. I had a radio brought to be by a freind, they had completely
removed the tuning slugs, stuck a screw into the choke, cut the bias jumper to the final and replaced it with a cap, was off freq,
turned all the modualtion out the trim caps to full max.

I dont even know where to get the tuning slugs anymore, except to canibulize an old radio.

It was showing .75 dead and swinging to 8.75, spurs all over sound horrible, but it could hear 3 Mhz each directions alll at once.

Got it fixed for the challenge when ask how much he owed told him it was free becasue he mever would be able to afford the repair.

That's a cute response. It makes more sense than your out of the box radio comment, so kudos.

Sir< pay attention to what JJD is teling you. I am 66 years old and been running amps for 40 years. Pay a little extra and buy a good one to begin with. My last amp took 6 watts to have proper modulation and good swing. Had to have radio "de-tuned" to 31/2 for current one. Even though I am not a fan of Texas Star or the so-called Palamars, I have heard some good ones. I used the term so-call Palamars because the original Palamar company went out of bussiness probably before you were born. Biggest mobile they ever made was the TX200. Basement models were and still are being made with a face plate saying Palamar. Take it from there.
